The first knife I bought with my own money was a buck crosslock. I needed a one handed opener for my first real job, a deckhand on a charter fishing boat. It was a fast knife and I got good opening it with a flick of the thumbstud or by inertia. Police officers called it a "Chelsea Switchblade" after a pretty tough suburb of Boston. The gut hook came in handy for cutting monofilament. I bought it at Law Enforcement Equipment in Waltham, Ma. I remember going in with my father and browsing through the knives. It was a nice day in May and I was about 17 or so. :) I'd had a lot of knives before then, mostly given to me by my dad, including my first knife, my parents got me on my tenth birthday, a Victorinox Tinker. Since then I've bought a lot more knives, some better, some WAYYY worse. I still have that tinker AND the crosslock though, both retired, both with a lot of sentimental value. :)

good post.

First knife I bought was some very cheap one that you would find at the local circus or similar. I've bought several like that over the years, they are all gone now though.

I think it was a cheap pakistani dagger. The second knife I ever bought was a Rambo-style hollow handle survival knife-my most prized possesion in 1989

The second knife I ever bought was some real SAK ripoff and I thought it was real. LOL, never seen a bigger p.o.s in my life. The scales came off after I went on a camping trip and accidently dropped in the lake. Still got the knife today actually, it gets used when I can't find my leatherman or feel like grabbing a screwdriver.

The first one I bought, I think it was a Russin all in one knife, it was junk, lol. Frist real knife I bought was a Buck.

first knife bought for me was a swiss army type knife by my dad at sears. First knife I bought for myself was a 3 dollar pakistan lockback purchased from the back pages of a boys life mag, I think it was the Johnson Smith company--shipping took 6 or 7 weeks, and I didn't even know enough to mind back then.

BlairB, I'm right there with you on that one. I found some really cheapo pakistani daggers in a dollar store when I was about 13 and bought 5 of them. I gave a few to some friends and a cousin and kept two for myself. I really got my money's worth out of them. I think those were the first knives I ever bought with my own money. My first knife ever was a folder from my dad, when I was 8. I broke it within a week while prying on some bamboo. Then he bought me a Buck Prince and I've had it ever since.

First knife I ever bought with my own money was a Schrade 125OT single blade liner lock folding hunter. The second was a Schrade Sharpfinger, forget the model number of those. Lost the hunter, sold the Sharpfinger, so both are long long gone. The fourth knife I bought was a Wenger SAK, the Angler model. I broke it in a fit of anger one night when I was having car troubles that were costing me a ton of money. Sooo, the first four knives that I ever owned are all lost forever. But I have plenty others to keep me happy now, so no big regrets.

My first knife was a gift from my dad.

The first one I actually bought for myself was a WW II USMC Bolo.

Dad showed me how to put a real edge on it, and I spent two days with a file and stone giving it an edge that would chop wood.

Around that same time, I also bought a set of X-Acto knives for wood carving, which I also learned from Dad, and a Western sheath knife (same size as a Buck 102).

It was nearly another ten years before I bought another knife. (Of course, somewhere in there, I managed to buy eight or ten swords while I was in England.)

But my first buy? Army surplus bolo.
