First knife, incomplete

Hopefully I picked the right forum for this. Loving this place, but still a bit overwhelmed navigating all the forums here.

So, just to avoid stumbling into breaking the rules posting a knife I've SOMEWHAT made (and still need to get friends to ship to me because I left it back in MI). I got myself a gold membership, so that I could share the few pictures I have of my first knife attempt. This knife was made from a sketch I redid a few times and then traced onto an old sawmill large circular saw blade. From there it was cut out with a hand grinder, and then mostly worked on with a hand held power sander. Loved working on it, wished I finished it before moving and am aching to get it and finish it off. Now, hopefully I manage to post the three pictures I have of it. The one with it sitting on the started attempt at scales is how it was left when I transferred across country. Be delicate with your criticisms, i'm but a simple joking bear. :P

Great start! There is another forum here called Shop Talk where we discuss building techniques. This forum is more of a showcase for completed works and collector acquisitions :). The guys in shop talk are very helpful, and there are a bunch of stickies at the top with a lot of how to guides, supplier lists etc.

Thank you Willie. Appreciate the compliment and where I should have put this. Am I able to move it? If not, could a moderator please move this thread to shop talk?

To add to this thread. If anyone is local, knowledgeable, and willing to take a newbie under their wing....... You know where I'm going with this. Even if just to finish this one knife. Either way, much obliged to all for a place to share my started work.

Fozzie:

It's a passion and it looks like you've got it. I highly recommend the book "How to make Knives," by Loveless and Barney.....that's how I got started. Best of luck to you because each knife is a journey.

TK, Thank you very much. I appreciate it, going to add that book to my amazon now to order once home. Appreciate this site and all you kind talented people and the help. Think i'm going to have to rearrange my apartment just to set up a knife working area. :)

Hi Fozzie,
I recently finished my first knife, too.
I just can recommend, to use files, even if it takes more time, you will get the feeling for the steel and if you use the grinder and grind away just a 1/10 of a milimeter in the wrong place, it will take you half an hour to fix it...
For me the hardest part has been, to make the bevels on both sides equal and not to leave the edge too thick.
As you will need to leave the edge about 1/2 mm strong before tempering, with the grinder you will tend to burn the edge if you're using high speed.
Better little by little with hand files.

That's my first experience.
