I've been reading on here for quite awhile now. Just recently purchased a vise and some tools to try my hand at building one. This is a wore out farrier's rasp. I put it in the fireplace and annealed it over night. Then I cut it to shape with a hand grinder. I was going for something similar to Jeff White's Pathfinder Scout Knife. After I cut it to shape I heat treated it in a charcoal grill (heated to non-magnetic and quenched in Canola Oil). I tempered it in a kitchen oven at 400 degrees for 1.5 hours. I hand sanded the blade to 400grit. The handles are Bois d'arc from a tree I cut down a few years ago after some wind damage. The handle slabs had been curing in the shed for a couple of years. I put the slabs on with epoxy and pins. I made some mistakes placing my pins, and originally planned on a lanyard tube, but didn't have a sharp enough bit to drill the tube hole. I sanded the slabs to 1000grit and put a Tru Oil finish on. It will shave hair and slice copy paper. I put so much into it, I've been scared to chop through a 2x4, lol! (To be honest, I don't have too many occasions to chop through 2x4s, but I like to show that one will shave!) I sharpened it through 1200 grit stones on an EdgePro, then finished the microbevel on a Sharpmaker.
