So far I have mostly been a lurker on this site. I have been inspired by all of your beautiful knifes to try my hand at making my own. I've been wanting to build a knife for several years and this site has been a tremendous help. I was unnable to determine exactly what type of steel I used, only that it is used to make planner blades. The handle is blood wood and the mosaic pins were made by myself. The heat treating was done with a small electric kiln, vermiculite, heated vegetable oil, and a toaster oven. This is my first knife so please be kind, I just wanted to share and say thanks for the inspiration. Sorry, the pictures aren't the greatest.

Well Bryan, I hate to tell you this, but you are probably "hooked"......... Crack-Rock ain't no addiction compared to making knives.

If my first knife looked that good, I would probably be a "Super-Star" by now.

Keep it up......do your homework on steels and heat treatment, and prepare yourself to share your creations with the world.

Bryan,

Welcome to the bladeforums (at least as a poster) and thank you for sharing the fruits of your efforts. It's lovely.

Cheers,
B.

Thank you all very much for the nice comments.
Hopefully with a lot of practice I can accomplish something close to the knives I have seen on here.

Now that's the Do-It-Yourself spirit!

Nice looking creation. It would be a great hunting field knife.

Tremendous effort for a first, and the result is outstanding. Congrats on your first. Hooked ? Of course, I wouldn't be as patronising as to say its perfect etc. but that is damned good !

Planer blade ? These days could mean anything. O1, A2, D2, if you managed to heat treat it in vegetable oil successfully, more likely to be O1 or A2. I don't even want to think what would have happened with D2 quenched in vege oil.

Now for your next project ... Cheers. Jason.

It looks a heck of a lot (and I mean a whole lot ;)) better than my first effort. (or second or third):)

Keep going!

I would have to be tied up and tortured to post a picture of my first knife. Thats nice for a first time.I feel sorry for you because you are hooked now and you'll never be the same. All of the planner blades I have ever seen new were D2 and it can be quenched in oil.
