(I posted this on another thread by accident and don't know how to move, so sorry for the double post.)

So far I have mostly been a lurker on this site. I have been inspired by all of your beautiful knifes to try my hand at making my own. I've been wanting to build a knife for several years and this site has been a tremendous help. I was unnable to determine exactly what type of steel I used, only that it is used to make planner blades. The handle is blood wood and the mosaic pins were made by myself. The heat treating was done with a small electric kiln, vermiculite, heated vegetable oil, and a toaster oven. This is my first knife so please be kind, I just wanted to share and say thanks for the inspiration. Sorry, the pictures aren't the greatest.

Looks good to me.I know ya' said you've been lurking for a while but since it's your first post,WELCOME! :D
Looks like ya' put some time into it,making your own mosaic pins, the filework on the spine,it is nice. The only advice I would give would be to use a known steel,it would be easier to access the relevant HT and tempering criteria. :D

Thanks,SK! Don Hanson made it a great one!
Bryan,How big is your knife? :)

Total length is 8" with a blade length of 3 5/8th.
I hope to make something 1/50th as nice as some of the blades I'v seen on here. Thanks for the nice comments.

That's a really solid design and good execution. Great photography, too. What's the steel and handle material?

- Chris

Chris,It's a steel used to make planer blades, which could be one of several cutting steels.Bryan stated this at the beginning of the thread. No disrespect meant Chris.

Dang man, that's great! You didn't pull any punches with your first knife, did you? The whole gammut - filework, mosaic pins, user, the works. I hope you keep and use this bad boy, you deserve to. Way to go, can't wait to see what you do next.

Thanks for sharing,

What is it with all the first time knives looking so good!? Nothing like my first sharpened hunk of steel. Good job with a lot of extras, nice shape too. Now your hooked for sure.

Great Looking Knife, are you sure it is your first:D :D

Really she looks great for the first, great job on the filework and pins also. She looks a whole lot better than my first.

Bad day, you know how it is. I've always wondered what bloodwood looks like. Now I know. Planer blade steel is usually L6, right?

- Chris

Bryan, Wow! Nice blade there mate. seriously well made. My first knife was a 25" saxon attack weopon. I thought i did a good job, O1 steel, Quercus Rubrum handle, all mod cons; I was wrong. Your knife is a little darling. Just out of interest, what would you accept as a reasonable price for your work there? I don't mean to be rude, or to seperate you from your work, i was just wondering.

Cheers Mate

Happy KM

Phattompson-
Thank you for the kind words.
I have read too many times about people regreting getting rid of their first knife. I'm going to hold on to this one to remind me where I started and to help measure my progress. I have templated out several more styles of knives and plan on cutting them out and heat treating them this weekend. Hopefully I'll have more knives to show soon.
