I am making my first knife out of 1/8 inch stock and i was wondering if i should grind the bevels before heat treat or wait tell after? I have read and heard that with thin stock you can/should wait tell after heat treat to grind the bevels so that warping will be minimized. However I don't know how true this is or how many people really follow it. Should i worry about warping that much?

Thanks for any and all feedback,
Marshal

What kind of steel aren you using? Hopefully a known steel that is suitable for a knife.

1/8" stock is plenty thick to grind in some bevels before heat treat. The edge should just under the thickness of a dime and you can grind it further after heat treating.

Are you doing the heat treat or sending it out?

Like Wl said, if you are using a steel that needs a quench 5160, 1084 1095 etc then thickness of a dime, if you are using stainless or A@ go to very close to the final thickness. Stainless needs alot less clean up than a quench steel.

The steel is CPM 154 and kind of a brushcrafterish blade. I'm sending it to Peter's Heat Treating for a 60 HRC, i figure i could'nt go wrong with that hardness. Thanks for the info, the part about the dime is cool because now i got something to judge the thickness i'm after. I've already done just about everything else to the blade, profiled, drilled holes, countersunk them, and all i gotta do now is put some file work on but now i'll grind some as well. I just wasn't sure to grind or not yet, I was hoping for a go for it and I'm glad I got it, grinding should be easier this way. :-) Thanks!
