Thought I would post a WIP pic of my first knife.

.125 O1 steel
6 3/8" OAL
2 1/4" blade length
.250 thong whole
1/8" holes for brass pins

Stock was flat ground when I started. Outside taken to a 240 grit finish. The belly in the handle isn't quite finished. When I went to mount my 8" wheel, I could not find the arbor to mount it to the arm, so I will have to wait till I find it or make another. Trying to decide whether I want to flat grind or hollow grind the blade. I am not good at either at this point, but I am finding flat grinding slightly easier. I was starting to get a little frustrated because of not finding the arbor, so instead of grinding pissed off, I stopped for the evening. The bevels will wait till tomorrow.

It will where a set of black micarta scales, 1/8 thick. Wish I had some 3/16 thick scales, as I think it would feel a little better, but I do not have anything on hand in that thickness.

Heat treating it myself in my Evenheat, quenching in Cannola. HT may have to wait till next weekend though.

Concerns, criticism, and tips welcome.IMG_0551.JPG

first knife????? and you have an evenheat? what did you do for a hobby before???? also, if you can afford the oven, the i would recommend buying the good oil. at least get the mcmaster carr stuff.

Hehe, I'm in the same boat. Got the evenheat before my first blade was even profiled. I splurged on the good oil though!

Knife is looking good so far. Keep it up!

I do not intend to continue to use high carbon steels. I will be focusing on air quench stainless steels in the future. I do not want to invest in the 'good stuff' to never use it again, nor do I want to store it. Canola is something I can get cheaply and dispose of easily. With all that said, I am staring at a 18" by 1 1/2" piece of 1095, that will most likely be water quenched whenever its ground and ready to be HT'ed. Live dangerously...

I bought a KMG and the Evenheat before I made anything. I started a few years ago with a 1x32" and became unhappy with the results, and stopped. I was determined to get good equipment this time around. Sold a few unused firearms that were expendable to pay for the KMG and the Evenheat.

cool. A note, though. most high end stainless steels will benefit from cyro, and so I would look into setting something up. it isn't that hard, but it would be a project.

I'm having a hard time seeing if the blade is even ground at all, but I think the design is good. I tend to place the pin holes differently than you. It depends upon where the front of the handle material is, but I would move the front hole forward to where the finger notch begins, then add another one centered between the front and back pin holes. I was going to suggest that the lanyard hole might be a little close to the edge, but with 1/8" thick scales it will probably not be a problem.

Wise man!
