it is not much but should work for me at least.

Don't fret the "need" for a shop. You can easily get this knife done with what you have there, maybe a C-clamp and a few spring clamps, a file or 2, and sandpaper will do you just fine. Some of us remember a maker who's first "vise" was clamping his blade to a post on his deck and he made a damn fine looking knife.

You can easily finish that knife with the items I mentioned above and a lot of elbow grease. Looks good so far, take you're time and we look forward to seeing it progress.

hey about the files i have 2. 1 is a nicholson flat mill bastard file the other is a chainsaw file also a nicholson, should i have some more i really want more. i also bought 2 small clamps i guess they are spring clamps the look like alligator clamps kinda, but i was planning on getting some c-clamps for sure. sandpaper is easy enough to get so that is no big deal, my main problem was just not having my vise secured down that was a pain.

Off to a good start.

Now, the next thing you need to do is get a roll of electrical tape and fix that power cord on your grinder.

i am surprised it took you all so long to see that. when i posted those pics i thought that would be the first thing mention. i will try to get that done as well.

Good, I was going to post about the un-bolted vise, but you have come up with a good work surface. Never use an angle grinder on a piece of un-clamped or hand held steel. When I was a lad, they ran new power lines along the new interstate highway. Cable spools were everywhere. We all had them for work tables, picnic tables, etc. It was not an uncommon sight to see a 10 year old kid rolling one home, down the middle of the street.

My first anvil was a four foot long piece of rail track. Served me well for years. Use six or eight 3"X1/2" galvanized lag screws and washers to bolt it down to the spool (Screw the lag screws in right next to the rail foot, with the washers extending over the foot).Laying down a bed of liquid nails/construction adhesive before you bolt it down will really make it sturdy and may make it quieter.

Frayed cords scare me,killed my cousin, back when tools were metal he as standing on a metal step ladder with a metal cased drill and a frayed cord, shorted out and killed him,He was 26 at the time.
Cords get fixed correctly or thrown out.

so i suppose grinding with no glasses is not good either( just kidding) i really didn't notice the cord until i posted the pic but i do have some electrical tape and will tape it up before i use it agian.

well i think i am ready for the heat treat, but how sharp of an edge do i need to put on my blade before heat treat? right now it does not have a very sharp edge is this going to be ok?

josh

Since you don't have a belt grinder you should get the knife to about 95% ready before H/T.All scratches sanded out, holes drilled, and take the edge to about .020.If you have no way to judge that get a feeler guage and look at the .020 blade and compare to yours.Make sure all mill scale is sanded off and the handle sections are flat, sand on a piece of granite or plate glass to make sure it's flat, then get us a picture and will let you know if ready.
Stan

OK well it looks like i have some more sanding to do then. how high of a grit do i need to go to before ht? i thought i saw it some where on the site but cannot remember where.

josh

Go to atleast 400,start with 180 or 220 and get all the scratches out then go to 400 annd get all the 220 scratches out.
Stan

hey folks got some more sand paper today and measured
my edge with my caliper and it read .030-.045 so i think i will not
have to much trouble with getting it to .020. is it ok to soak the knife in viniger overnight to help with the sanding in the morning?
