gunkx.jpg

I'm thinkin O1 steel and this barb wire micarta (http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/prod...=2733&osCsid=f2e4c3d8fef1b4a4e50a35b06bda6b5d)
from TKS for handles with red liners. What do you guys think of the design and mateirals?
(i'm gonna start with the neck knife I think than do the larger blade)

I think making the necker is a good idea. I think the size of the detail in the micarta will match the size of knife you're making. What thickness steel are you planning to use? For neckers I prefer thinner stock, around 1/8". Your designs are classic and timeless though I would make the curves of the blades with larger radius's's's (whatever!).

yeah i was planning on 3/16" or 1/4" for the larger blade and 1/8" for the neck knife. Is 1/4" a lot harder to use than 3/16"

Varies by maker... if you are working with files 1/4" will take a LONG time to get the bevels established. I made my first knives with files and I thought 1/8" stock sucked... the thickest I have used is 3/16 and even with a grinder I found it was just a lot more work...

Looks like you have a plan for a nice 1st Build, take your time and it will look great

As Wolffbite said, thicker steel just a takes longer time to shape. There is a lot more steel to grind/file away with thicker stock. It's deceptive when you first start filing the bevels because it seem like you're progressing really well and aught to be done soon. But eventually as the bevel climbs up the side of the blade it starts to go slower an it seems like no matter how much you file you see little if any progress. Now that I have my "mighty" Sears 2X42 grinder I can screw up my blades in far less time then when I was using files.

Also I don't have a forge, all I got is a OA torch. is that fine for HT or do I need to figure something else out?
