Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking here for a few days, reading a bunch of threads, and I went out today and bought a CRKT today. Last time I bought a folding knive was in high school 17-18yrs ago. I bought 3 or 4 "utility" knives a couple of years ago figuring that way there'd always be one around. Nope. Amazing how even the bright orange and lime green ones can disapear in my garage and basement.

So I read a bunch about steels, different manufacturers, etc. Went down to my local gun shop where they sell Benchmade, Kershaw, Emerson, Gerber, CRKT and a bunch of others. Was going to get the new benchmade 921with two blades, one in s30v and the other in 440c, or a Kershaw Boa in 440v I think.

It's funny, despite being a techno-geek, I wound up buying a CRKT Wasp with the combo blade (no plain edge in stock). Wasn't the $45 savings, was simply that it looked friendlier and felt OK. Not as comfy as the Boa, but better than the 921. Besides, I figured that if I managed for almost 20yrs without a pocket knive, it would be plenty good enough for me. AND, I won't need to use sheet metal snips to cut twine again, like I did this afternoon!

Took my $84 purchase home, took the scales off and gently rounded off the bottom of the grip with a dremel. Then I rounded the edges of the scales with an emory board. Now I'm happy! It's clearly not that Anderson beauty (I think that's the right name, sorry if my memory is off)I saw on the Wharncliff thread. That'll be one I'll wish for for a while. But it's practical, not too costly, not too mean looking to use in public, and mine.

I never would have gotten around to buying a pocket knive if you guys here at blade forums hadn't reminded me how much I like them. So thank you.

Todd

Six months from now, you'll probably have 3 or so more knives. :D It's sort of like that Pringles jingle...

Toddler, welcome to BladeForums.

I like the Viele design. Did you get the large or the small Wasp? $84.00 is a pretty good price from a B&M store.

Wow, fast replies!

Mr. Williams,

You're probably right! And maybe it'll keep me from buying that S&W642. One can hope!

Keith,

I got the larger size. Powderhorn Outdoor Sports up here in VT has pretty good prices on most of the hardware they sell, and they're nice to deal with. If it cost me $5-10 more than mail order, so be it. This way I get to handle the product before I buy it, which made a difference today.

While you guys were replying, I looked up the knive at CRKT's sight. Says the frame is Titanium. I love it. My bicycle is Ti (Merlin) and it satisfies my nerdly nature. Heck, if I ever kill the blade, maybe I'll just cut and grind myself a slightly thicker replacement from D2 in a true Wharncliff.

Night,

Todd

Merlin Huh? If you put just a portion of the money one of those costs into your knife collection, you are going to have some really nice knives.

welcome aboard the forums Todd! once here, you'll be addicted to it! I know....I hit my 150th post w/o realising....;) . Yup, Keith's right on the dollar...if you refrain from changing new shifters, cranks, forks every couple of months to your Merlin...you'll get some beautiful customs....me thinks! I know....I've stopped upgrading my humble klein....

spyken,
haven't upgraded anything in 5yrs except tires. don't get to ride enough with two kids to wear the bike out. besides, it's never the bike holding me back!
