I am starting to get a feel for what I want to be making now so, I spent some time designing a line of EDC's. There are four in the lineup; a drop-point, a clip-point, a semi spear-point, and a tanto. They will all measure 7-1/8" OAL and have 3-1/8" blades. These are the first two from the group. I plan to offer these in a field service, micarta handled version all the way to a decked out custom with mammoth and engraving.

Here's the idea I started with.

I like #1 for an EDC although it looks like it would be best in a folder. If its a fixed blade it needs to be small enough to carry everyday.

Wow, Bruce Bump posted in my thread...and apparently killed it. Who's going to have anything to contribute after Bruce?

#2 and #4, the two profiles I would've picked to see actual pictures of. Beautiful work. How thick are the handles and how would someone go about ordering one?

You are better off starting with folders.....in this economy and this talent pool level, these are (well built) entry level pieces and will not sustain a career, imo.

The handles are about 3/4" at the widest. You can email me at ohlemannr@hotmail.com to order. I am working on a website but it will be a couple more weeks.

I believe this to be good advice. I don't know the custom knife business; I doubt there are very many new makers that do. I currently do not need to feed my family with my knife-making proceeds. I am looking at this as investing in my retirement. I'm currently 47, retired from the military with a pension and healthcare, and have a very supportive wife who makes good money in her career; I have some time to build a name and develop a style that will resonate with buyers. I like the idea of making folders and intend to do so but, I also really like some of the amazing fixed blades being produced by very talented artisans. I finished my first knife in June. That someone with your experience and knowledge considers my knives as "well built entry level" is a badge of honor. Perhaps they will not sustain a career but, I'm thinking they can help to launch one.
