Ok I finally got up the nerve to post my first two trys.
The big one I forged out of a bar of 0-1, roughly 3/4" x 1/4" x 6"
I really had no plan, I just wanted to go through the forging process. I ended up with a 7 1/2" blade about 1 1/2 " wide. Overall length is 13 1/2 ".
I didnt spend a lot of time on finishing because I just dont have it to spend.
The little one( my first try) is your basic multi function tool. You can spread your butter, OR tighten your 5/16 hex bolt. :p
I actually think the end result on the big one is from a distant memory of a bayonet that i held when I was a kid.
Im jonesing bad to swing the hammer again. I did these 3 months ago.
opinions anyone?
Pat

Intersting choice of handle shape on that big one there; looks like it would pair up well if you ground a clip point into the blade. What wood do you have there?

ok 111 views and 1 comment.? I guess that means dont quit your day job.
Thanks for your reply mr Guertin. Its just a hunk of cherry, with a little stain on it

Pat,

I was unclear whether you sought a comment or a critique. They would be quite different, of course.

So, to comment, I would say they are much better than my first ever efforts. Your proportion and concept is good, as I would expect from an artist. I would take the big job and go to the grinder and put a bit more point on by grinding down the spine a bit a couple inches from the tip forward. It will change it's "approval rating" a lot. The other, I would save and enter in the ugly knife contest here. You are competetive with that entry :D Don't ever let either go, you will remember them fondly in years to come.

If you want an actual critique, ask. There's no need for that, though, because I'm sure you learned a lot to incorporate into your next efforts. Like pottery, this is a practice-for-skill artisan endeavor.

As for quitting your day job, I don't EVER recommend fulltime knifemaking to anyone. It's a tough way to make a living except for a very few.
