Hi there, fellas.
Just yesterday I recieved a Dui Chirra from a fellow forumite who lives nearby, and this is my first real kukri.

How the heck am I supposed to carry this thing? It has pouches on the back of the scabbard for 6 accessory tools plus a tinder pouch (?), making the whole outfit over 3 inches thick. I usually carry my big bowie by tucking it into my belt crossdraw, but with this thing it would be like carrying a brick- sideways. If I tried to carry it by threading my belt between the pouches, I don't think they'd support the weight, and I'd still have to walk with my arms out like a gorilla.

I have no use for all the accessory tools anyway, so I'll probably just remove all the pouches. (anybody interested in them?) Even then, the scabbard will still be about 3 times thicker than the wooden scabbard of my bowie knife, making it rather bulky. I may have to do some alterations.

Is there some trick I've been missing?

Nope...it's a big 'un.

If you want to carry the whole rig, hook up some sort of baldric. If you just want to carry the khukuri itself, I've seen nice individual scabbards set up for quick draw in either wood & leather or in Kydex.

If you do find yourself removing the acessories, I'd be happy to take them, and give them back if you change your mind later on.

What, your ears aren't brimming with earwax?

You know, you can use the patented earwax-removal tool to scoop that stuff out and make a great waterproofing dressing for your scabbard. :barf:

Glad the Dui Chirra arrived safely. I was a bit worried about it being damaged in transit as tightly as I had crammed it into the box.

You could contact Terry Sisco about having a regular scabbard made for your DC. I'd also get one of his baldrics too as they are meant to make carrying the longer khukuris easier (I'm having a baldric made and will post a review when it comes).

Thanks again, Bob.
Last night I took off all the accessory pouches, which were just held on by small tacks and a few stitches of string. It really changed the carrying ability. I can tuck it in my belt now, and the girth is still a lot more than I deem necessary, but I think it will work for now. The rig came with a leather strap long enough to wrap around the scabbard twice, with two big "buttons" on the ends. (honestly, this is the strangest way I've ever seen to attach a button) So far it rides in my belt well like this, but I can also loop the strap around my belt to keep it from sliding all the way through, and keep everything in place on the draw.

Morgane-
Since you were first to ask, I'd be happy to send the extra tools and pouches your way, if you don't mind covering the shipping. Just email me.

On the way home last night, I stopped by one of our woods and did some informal chopping on some hardwood trees downed by a tornado. I also had my big Bowie just for reference.
In Big Bob's review of this knife, he mentioned it getting stuck in the wood, and I could see why when I first looked at the blade. I really didn't expect it to have a hollow ground edge. I also experienced a lot of sticking, so I'll probably reprofile it to a nice convex edge. It really doesn't chop hardly any better than my bowie as it is now, but once I regrind it, it should be better. Also, I'm gonna investigate what I can do to change the balance (natural centers of rotation) of this kuk. The "sweet spot" is nearly half way down the blade, and if I chop with the tip at all, it results in painful vibrations to my hand.

Perhaps I'll take some pics and do a "before and after" comparison.
Give me some time.
