First large Becker purchase? (bk 7 or 9)

One of the first knives I bought was the Becker Necker and I love the look and feel of that solid slab of steel. My most recent purchase was a Ka-bar USMC knife and I'm looking for something to complement it.

I was discussing in my first thread I made what knife I should get under $75 - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=794817

Since seeing that on Amazon, I could get the Beckers for so cheap that might be my best option for price/quality right now. I love the look of the more expensive ones but I can still get them later on and have me another Becker now :).

Any suggestions? Looking at the BK7 since I'm noticing how large the knives are on youtube. Ka-bar has the machete (1/4 inch thick 9inch blade) for under $50 though so I'm wondering what the BK9 has on it to make it $20 more.

So I guess I'm trying to decide on the 7 or 9, probably the 7 though to match my USMC knife, but it's tough since the 9 is only $6 more.

Thanks! Loving reading through the posts on this site so far, very informative. It's scary though because I do have an addictive personality...

Lol, now I'm looking at the BK2 as well. What have I gotten myself into?

Go with the BK7. Its a good middle of the road, and great first buy. It gives you a good feelin solid knife, capable of tackling most if not all the chores you find yourself getting into in the great outdoors. I personally like the BK2, and the BK9, and hell, I own all three, but for a first out the gate, getta 7, you will be thrilled you did.

Thanks, thats what I'm going to do. I have a few large machete's and I have 10-15 pocket knives so a BK7 seems to be a good size. I'm pretty sure I will get the BK2 also. I love my BK11 and the way it fits into it's sheath, just wished it was bigger, so the BK2 seems to be pretty much just that.

wmc,

I commented on your other thread but let me say this, If its still up for debate I would recommend the 9, I bought a 7 first because I was replacing a knife similar in size, my opinion is if you have something close to that size get the 9.. then the 2, then the 7 then the??

you said it yourself you have an addictive personality, as we all tend to ...

once you get one in hand you'll have to get em all:D

either way its a win, win..

you could get the micarta slabs for the 11, then it will feel plenty big :)

OR if you wished the 11 was bigger, the 14 feels like a bit more of a handful, same blade, slightly longer and different feeling handle. it's my favorite EDC for my man-bag.

There's something about the 7's blade/tip that makes it very versatile for a relatively large blade. It can be used for quite intricate work yet handles all camp chores very well, including chopping and batoning.

+1 foer the 14 as a companion blade - drops into a pocket very nicely for walks and outdoor chores.

The BK7 is suprisingly light and nimble in hand. My friend has a Rogue bowie and he tries to get me to trade, every time I take my BK7 over. I might do it so I can sell the thing and buy a couple more BK7's. The guardless Rogue allowed his hand to slip forward and nick his finger. He hasn't liked the knife since. I'm not dissing on BRK, just saying that when you feel the BK7 in hand, compared to a much more expensive knife, you will love it even more. It weighs less and I got lucky enough to get one with a remora in the front pouch. A complete set up that will cover all your bases.

Get the BK-9. If I remember Correctly, Ethen Becker designed the BK-7 as a modern replacement for the Kabar Fighting knife. Since you want to compliment it, not replace it, get the BK-9. It's larger, has more chopping power and IMO a great intro into Becker knives. Plus, it was the first one I got. ;)
