There has been a lot of rumors last year, about the possibility that Victorinox is bringing a new member of the Pioneer-series to the market. A Pioneer with scissors, thats what everybody and his aunt where talking about.
It turned out to be true, what a thrill!
In my humble opinion the most discussed new entry in the last few years...
You can imagine my exitement, as my peferred dealer informed me, that a package was on its way to me (Preorder when you can...)

But, what could it possibly be?

We know the overpack from previous Limited Editions, but whats it gonna be this year?

Well, the blade at least :-)

Nicely done, the presentation case. A high quality cardboard box, window and a strong magnet, lest the Pioneer goes AWOL :-)

Under the inlay with the magnet we find the description, I´ll upload it for your interest:

The blade is a piece of art, I´m stunned:

Even the Alox-scales are different this time. I´d call it „Gun Metal Grey“, Victorinox calls it „Grey with a touch of green“. What ever the name of the colour, I like it a lot!

Speaking of Limited, in this case it means, that only 5000 pieces are made.
Considering Victorinox has a daliy output of roughly 120.000 knives, thats realy nothing. So better get going, if you want to get one!
(I sterilized the serialnumber, so don´t get confused, that there´s just a „0“ )

The Pioneer-series is made to be tough. But honestly I have a hard time, putting a beauty like this trough its paces. Enough others to choose from :-)

The beauty...

Speaking about functionality, the tolls a Pioneer comes with should be well known by now, but to be thorough, heres a tool-shot:

The firt to post what the little blue one is, earnes the titel „SAK-connaisseur of the day“!

So, what can one say about Victorinox, that hasn´t been said a thousand times before?
Outstanding quality?
Build to last?
Best bang for buck ratio in the whole business?
Addictive as hell?

Amen to all of the above :-)

Victorinox makes fun, each and every time, till the next one arrives...

I bought one hoping the same thing.

I have been carrying a Pioneer and a Vagabond, and the most used tool on the Vagabond was the tiny scissors. So now maybe I'll try replacing both with this.

The pattern on the Damascus is not as attractive to me as a smaller repeating pattern, but I didn't buy it for the pattern. I bought it for the HRC 60 Stainless steel in the Damascus. I like sharpening these blades more acute than the factory does, since I know the work it does will not cause much lateral stress. And I wanted a blade steel that would let me push that even more acute to get more cutting ability. Time will tell.

The first thing I did was to put a more acute edge on it. Sharpening took more time than the standard Victorinox stainless, but not much. Maybe a few minutes more per side on the Coarse DMT to take the shoulders off, and lower the bevel a few degrees. From there, refining the edge took about as much effort as a normal blade would. I hope the edge retention is noticeably greater, or I've spent a lot of money on a failed experiment. :)

The Damascus etch does have a "cloudy" look to part of it, as SwissBianco noted on his youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9cMYIjyKfI) but since mine's a user, it doesn't matter. It's pretty subtle, though. Much worse is going to happen to the pretty blade soon enough.

That is a beauty. I'm still kicking myself for not pre-ordering one of these when I had the chance.

I got one of these as father's day gift, for sure it will be part of my EDC rotation so it can see some action from time to time.
