I had an itch this morning to head to Smoky Mountain Knife Works (about a 45 minute drive). The holidays are coming, I need some ideas, and there are only a few weekends left to get to the store without risking a serious case of road rage.

For the past 4 years or so, I've carried a Benchmade mini-Grip on my days off (the pocket clip doesn't go too well with the daily Dockers). During the work week, I carry a Victorinox Tinker (had a few over the past 20 years). While I was there, I decided I might look at a new pocket knife. I like my mini-Grip a whole lot, and wanted something similar, but a bit bigger if I could find it. I wanted a non-black blade if I could get it.

I looked at Kershaws. I have had a couple (still have a few Sapphires) and they've been a good knife. I don't care for assisted opening, so the Leek ended up off the list. I looked (again) at Spyderco, and just couldn't bring myself to fall for one. Something about the blade shape and handle don't work for me. I looked at Ka-Bars, larger Grips, heck I was even looking at a Case folder to change it up.

After walking through the store (and buying a Mora knife in the process, couldn't resist), I found myself at the Buck counter. I don't think I've ever owned a Buck. As a kid, my dad had an old 110 that I got to use on occasion, but when it came time to buying knives, at first the Buck line was just old hunting knives, then it was imported junk compared to some of the other makers.

I looked at a number of knives, but the larger Vantage just felt really, really good in my hand. I was afraid it would be too big for pocket carry, but I decided to try it anyway. I went with the Pro for the s30v steel and the G10 handles, and figured I'd blown $60 on dumber things before. I've been messing with it all day, and I'm very pleased with my purchase. The liner locks about halfway across the blade, the blade is very sharp, and it's centered reasonably well by my eye.

It'll take a few months for it to break in right, but so far I'm really liking my new knife. Enough that I'm considering one of the smaller ones as well, possibly for pocket carry without the clip. I still can't believe I bought a Buck.

Congrats! You made a great choice. I have a Vantage Pro (347) and it's an excellent folder. The steel holds a great edge and the knife is built very well. The blade is a nice drop point style which works well for nearly everything. S30V steel in a $60.00 folder! One of the best buys in a quality folder out there, IMHO. FWIW, Buck has been putting some really nice knives out there.

Here's mine:

Hi 59Bassman, welcome to the Buck forum. I have a small vantage pro that I removed the clip from for pocket carry. It is an excellent option for a Low Profile EDC. I found the small vantage to be more comfortable in hand without the clip as well.

That seems to be a very well-liked knife and it does have pleasing lines and works well.

Form and function......that's what it's all about.)

I carried a small diamond wood Avid for a long time. I thoughtthe large was too big until I started carring one. I carry the large diamond wood Avid and dont even know its there until I need it. I've tried to carry my small knife and I feel naked. I love the Vantages, even if they have a few issues.

If you want assisted opening you can go with the Paradigm. Very similar but with a neat opening system. Cost more though.

I'm not that into the assisted opening myself so I'm good with the Advantage. I own a Paradigm but it hasn't gotten any carrying time. Not as "sheeple" friendly.

paradigm is on my list of knives to get, just will have to wait till i have the money for it. i also want to get the csar-t pro, a buck custom build 110 and some others. i think we should care less about it being sheeple freindly. if we always did that none of us would carry around knives, or drive a truck or go hunt and fish. whatever it is that we like to do.

I Got the same knife a while back and have nothing bad to say about it!
( A little lube on the joints every couple months doesnt hurt though)

...a buck custom build 110...
Me too, once I have some funds to play with.

Part of being a man is having courtesy and consideration for others. No need to "freak out the squares" if it's not necessary. There's plenty of room for us to be ourselves, while at the same time remaining mindful and respectful of others' sensibilities.

I picked up a Vantage in Sportsman's Warehouse a couple of months ago. I thought it would be too big, I don't really like big folders. It's perfect! I love the ergonomics, the steel (420 HC), and how easy it is to sharpen. It cuts very well, and just disappears in my pocket.

Every once in a while, a knife just seems right when I hold it. The Vantage line is one of those knives.

Thank you Buck knives!!!!

The Vantage Pro is a good knife and one of the least expensive S30V blades out there. Buck does a great job with their heat treating process, so it's even better than the S30V offered by other makers. I carried the Pro for awhile, but the clip started to tear into my pocket. If you wear pants with a strong cloth and weave, it shouldn't be a problem, though.

The Vantage series has a lot going for it -- the deep-pocket clip is one of the best I've found.

My only quibble: clips on the newer Forces are black (thanks!) while clips on the older, original series Vantages remain silver.

Color aside, the clip on my small Vantage Pro is just about perfect for EDCing in an urban office setting. Other makers should take notice.
