Hello everyone,
I am almost new here, and french , so be gentle with my english.
Already have Strider, XM18, microtech, and french tactical customs but I want to buy my first Emerson: I need your help: difficult to choose between Commander and CQC15. I want a big EDC knife, as I am living in a lonesone place, not in town, and used to spend a lot of time in the forest. Both seem to be ok for that? Or not?
To buy an Emerson from france it is not so easy; I found some here but with prices.... more or les 420 US$ for both. To order from US is sometimes impossible (no international shipping), and often custom taxes are heavy. On ebay, I found this one "Rush's Knives and Things" store with very good prices and shipping abroad. Anyone knowing it?
I would prefer a stonewashed blade with plain edge, but SW finish is not so common....
To finish: some here say that these knives are very difficult to sharpen? Why? (Chisel edge?). Seeing the number ol people happy here with Emerson, I can't think could be so difficult...

Thanks you all, as this forum particulary let me know these nice knives...

Although both knives are "combat" knives the 15 is a whole lot more suited for stabbing. The commander is a lot like a naval knife that has its tip curved down. I would say the commander would be better in the woods but with the recurve I am not sure if either are suited for any bushcraft.

ok thank you; I forgot to include in my wish list CQC 8: maybe other combat knife. Well, I have big knives for buscraft, but this one is more for an EDC knife, considering that in my "lonesome place", I do not need to hide my knife and do not care about the legal character or not of the knife. I used the knife in the forest, in my old house where I am working (on the roof now), and in my work, as a doctor needing not so often but sometimes, a hard knife (car accident, etc...).

The CQC-8 is a good choice. I like the edge on the 8 better
than the Comm or 15. Much easier to sharpen too.

I take a CQC 8 : found on knicenter with good price for international. There are there super CQC8 with SW blade, witch I love it, but more than 10"... even here not so easy to carry :-)

Hi, and welcome to the forums. I just recently purchased a CQC15 myself after much deliberation between the CQC15 and the Commander. I like both of them and to me the blades are quite similar in that they have recurve. I liked the hybrid tip a little better on the 15. Ultimately, I found a good deal here on the forum so that settled it for now. I am sure this wont be my last Emerson. What I like most about the CQC15 is the handle, specifically the pommel and hilt. Enjoy your CQC8!

Careful who you buy from, many online knifestores advertise knives that they don't have in stock. I've bought from Rush in Arcadia, La before, he claims that he doesn't advertise a knife that he doesn't have in stock, and I can vouch for that, good guy. Also, forget that crap about emerson's being hard to sharpen, if anything, they're easier. Any of they models you are considering should serve well.

I bought it on knifecenter: many french guys are buying there apparently. I really don't understand why brands like Emerson are so expensive here in Europe: they are not in the US, much less than strider or Hinderer. But here a CQC8 is about 300€, it means more than 450US$.Even without custom taxes that's too expensive... May be is it because tactical knives are not so appreciated here.

The Commander is their flagship design and the paradigm of "tactical" knives, in my opinion. If you regret owning a Commander than you're not an Emerson person.

The Commander is the safest bet of all Emersons, save for, perhaps, a CQC-7.

All the "other" Emerson designs are the sort that you can like or not like the design of, but the plain-edge waved Emerson Commander is the main Emerson Tactical knife, in my opinion, and a beauty to behold. Anyone who buys one of those and regrets it isn't really an Emerson fan!;)

Well let's see: I bought a CQC8 and I am waiting it for 11/06. Maybe the first of my Emersons? I love the CQC15, the commander, but also CQC10,11, 7 :-) I do not really like clip point blade.... but I could change...
I will take some pics in "my forest"

I didn't think Emerson could produce a knife I liked as much as the Commander, but I do like the CQC-15. Either one is a great knife.

I think overall the Commander has the edge, as the CQC-15 blade profile is mostly commander with a slight tanto angle to it. I don't think you'd go wrong either way. I'm wearing a Commander right now, and have more commanders and mini commanders. I've got a CQC-15 back in the states that I really like, and when I get home I'll likely buy another or two.

The Commander is a really hard design to beat for nearly everything I do with a knife. Sometimes I really need a thin skinny blade, and I have other knives for that...but for utility every day carry and a knife I can carry for the very real prospect of defense, the commander works just fine for me.
