First Pocket Knife, Again

On my seventh birthday, I received my first pocket knife. A five blade Boy Scout Knife with brown delrin handles. It was lovely to behold, to a seven year old, anyway. I carried that knife most days. I used each blade numerous times. Over twenty plus years, I really used that knife to its limit. Until one day, the blades had lost their snap, and the spring could not hold the knife in the open position any longer. I officially retired the knife.
I started to carry other knives. First a stockman. Then a barlow followed by a congress and an English Jack. Fold locks came to be in my pocket from time to time, too. I then bought my first Spyderco. Lost it and bought another. Lost that one and bought another. The original molded in plastic clips always broke. The Benchmade made an entrance with more knives finding a home in my pocket. I bought a GEC and the bug took hold. But no matter what knife I had in my pocket, none seemed to fill the void. Then I bought a Queen Scout knife with buffalo handles. I just felt right in the pocket, but not quite. I knew then What I needed.
So I searched the Bay for my first knife. In the see of Boy Scout Knives on the Bay, it is hard to find one in good condition with the Philips Head Screwdriver blade. But I did. I found one. Now I have a knife worthy of my first. Now I can carry one knife again and never feel like I am in need of more. Nothing feels as reassuring in my pocket as a five blade Ulster Boy Scout Knife.
I know there are other knives like it. But they never had the Philips Head Screwdriver. and SAK's never appealed to me.Now all is right in the world again.

My Original Ulster BS Knife

My new BS Knife

A shot of the wear in the blade of my first knife compared to the second. I learned how to sharpen knives on my old BS knife.

Fantastic! I am currently an ASM for 701 in La Puente CA. That is a great story and great knives!

Great job finding another one! I'm sure it'll serve you well, there's nothing quite like those old scout knives in terms of function and aesthetics.

Very cool! Nothing brings back memories like that first knife. It's great that you still have it!

You just gotta love the old scout knives.
I have a white handled Ulster 4 blade scout knife in my pocket.

Bozak,
Thanks for the story and the pics of the knife. I have picked up about half a dozen Scout knives over the last 6 or 7 years since I came back to traditional knives. They are wonderful tools and great pieces of nostalgia!

Nice.
At first i thought the Phillips head screwdriver looks like an afterthought.
It seems however that the Phillips head screw has been around since the mid 1930s.
Love the old scout knives.

I am ready to find the one and not need any more.
Instead of safe queens I have been rotating more and gifting more (ugh!).
I think my passion is growing instead of reaching a plateau.
I am glad you found your first knife, you can sell me more gecs (that last one was a true gem)
Take care, ode

Great story bozack, you picked a great one for a first knife, glad you were able to find a replacement.

Thanks, everyone. Having that knife just feels right. But I still have another pocket to fill with another knife. I usually carry two all the time now. Sometimes three.
