Hello, I have lurked this forum for a little wile now, picking up bits a pieces of info here and there. I was looking into knives for about 6 months when it hit me that I should just try my hand at making a knife rather than buying one. I have it roughed out at this point and the question is, Are there any tricks or tips on how to keep the edge centered?

If this forum is anything like the rest I post in, I have to apologize because I have no pics of it as of yet. next will be the question of what kind of steel I used. Its almost 1/4" 5160, as for the heat treat it is going to be done by a local shop that makes blades, the same place I got the steel.

Thanks for any help and advice.

There are scribing tools made for knifemakers to mark edge lines on your steel stock, a dial height gauge also works well, some guys just use a dial caliper and scribe with one jaw while the other rides along the side.
You can also lay the blade down on a flat surface and use the tip of a drill bit of the same size (for a center line) or a slightly smaller bit (to mark a certain thickness for the edge, marking from both sides), and drag the bit along the edge side to scratch lines.

scribe a line down the center of the blank edge and stop when you get half the thickness of a dime away on each side of the line. the edge should be at least the thickness of a dime before heat treat.

Thanks for the info, I just got a few things left to finish up before I start on the edge. I got my hands on an engraving tool that should do the trick of making a line down the center. I also just got some pics, kind of a steps i have taken it so far.

Its going to have about a 6" blade, 4.5" handle area, for about 10.5" over all. So far it has been done mostly by hand, only tools I have had to work with are a 4" angle grinder and hand files. At this point I'm really not sure what I'm going to do for slabs.

Thanks again for the help, and any more that comes my way will be appreciated.
