First Post, First Khuk, Super CAK!

Hello all!!

I've been creeping around the forum for a few weeks, trying to learn as much as possible before introducing myself. I happened upon HI when I was looking at the Ka-Bar Khuk, and started doing some research. After all the glowing comments by the posters here about HI and Auntie Yangdu, I decided to take the plunge!

Well, here is the result, the Super CAK! Now, I won't wade into the controversy about whether this should be called a Super CAK as I've read some people say, I'll let others decide. But let me just say that I am HOOKED :) :) :)

I'm astounded at the quality of this piece, and the sheer impressiveness of it's heft. It's beautiful, so hurling it into a hapless piece of wood gives me pause, but I'm sure I'll bring myself to do so in the near future.

Really, though, I have to send a special THANK YOU to Yangdu, who endured my endless questions and outright changing my mind about what I wanted. She came through for me by suggesting this beauty, and I am thrilled to death...so much so that I now have two more HI's on the way right now ;)

Congrats and welcome! This is a "super" khukuri, no doubt there. The top fuller is deeeep! Give it a workout and, if you will, post some pics or a video. Hope the other two knives are coming soon, the wait always kills me.
 
that is awesome. the more i see the more i want that satial wood. that dark deep grain is lovely!!
 
Welcome Operaman! What ever you call it, it is beautiful! The detail on that beast is superb. I bet your dying to put the chop on some wood, but can't bring yourself to mar the blade, right? That is a problem with these working works of art. Enjoy your khuk and keep us posted on the rest when they arrive. Take care.

I should also have mentioned that this particular blade was made by Bhakta Kami, and is 18". Don't know the exact weight yet, but it is definitely a beast :)

The sickness didn't take long to set in with you! Welcome to the forum and congratulations on that beautiful Super CAK. Nice job on that classic photo of the kukri leaning against its sheath, it makes it look like a show piece.

So what are the two other models you have ordered?

Lots of people make some mistakes when they first use a kukri and end up in the ER. One of the mistakes is sheathing and unsheathing. The web is full of pics with of palms cut open because they hold the scabbard incorrectly while taking the blade out or putting it back in. The other big mistake, especially with a brute like the CAK and Super CAK is swinging for the fences like a home run hitter and finding out too late that it is nearly impossible to stop the blade at the end of the stroke and it finds a leg or the other arm. Once again, a trip to stitcher is needed.

Thanks, Shortwinger! I'm definitely going to heed those warnings. I like all my fingers and toes right where they are :D

As for the other blades I have coming, one is a 20" Sirupati and the other is an 18" ASTK in the villager finish. At least I know I won't be skittish about marring the finish on that one.

I'd also like to get a BAS when they come back into stock....and when my bank account recovers!
 
Congrats Operaman-These are beautiful blades indeed-Bhakta deserves a standing "O" for his excellent work.Your first post mentions "hurling" the blade into a piece of wood.I hope you don't mean throwing the knife...In any case,enjoy.
 
Nice pictures - and that's a nice grain pattern...I like the way it is symetrical around the pins. Once you get over the mental hurdle of chopping some wood with it I bet you'll be as impressed by its chopping ability as much as with it's looks. Progressively finer sandpaper and some metal polish (e.g. Flitz) can resore the shine if you're inclined to keep it that way.
