Hello all,

First post in this forum! I like the round Spyderco hole, which actually allows me to open the knife more easily, safely and quickly than almost any other method. But I'm overwhelmed by the variety of models and don't know where to look!!

Can you recommend some Spydercos with these characteristics? My main cutting task is slicing. I like thin, ultra-sharp blades that I can maintain. So I'm looking for a Spyderco that has:

  • Plain edge
  • Flat-ground
  • Lightweight
  • Very sharp
  • Simple design
  • A steel whose edge that I can easily maintain
  • Length closed up to 4.5"
I have the Caly3 carbon fiber but wonder if I can find lighter.... Thanks to all!

Greg!----not the same GregNYC from sufu?

Anyhow, I've got the G10 Caly3, myself.
Also looking for something smaller as the Caly is at my outside limit with regard to size for EDC. Thinking about a Dragonfly, Cricket or even a Ladybug Salt. Cat looks perfect, though un-gettable.

Caly 3
Sage 1 or 2

Welcome to BF. All the knives listed in above posts are good too, just pick the one that appeals to you the most.

Lighter than a CF Caly3? That might be hard in a bigger knife. Since your OK with up to 4.5 closed it sounds like your trying to upsize. My two EDC knives now are the Sage II and Para. Both slighted larger knives and light and awsome slicers. Those are my first choice suggestions for you. Oh, both are rock solid and silky smooth...what could be better?

I'd say flat ground Delica/Endura. I think they're both available in G10 so far, but FRN is planned for next year.

If you want the ultimate lightweight full flat ground Spyderco, you'll have to haunt eBay and the Exchange forum here and ferret out a VG-10 FRN Calypso Jr. It's a 1.9 oz pocket light saber. If you're willing to forgo the full flat grind, the ultra thin 2mm blade on the 2.5 oz Centofante 3 and Centofante 4 makes them excellent slicers. Otherwise, the Caly 3 is hard to beat at the moment. Or, if you can live without a lock, the 2.4 oz UKPK would be worth considering.

To everyone - you can PM me if this is not an appropriate forum question, but is there an official or favorite forum dealer?

Gollum - Thanks - I quite like slipjoints, so I'll give the UKPK a try!Spyderco Urban Safety Orange ~ C127OR

ddml - Yes, that's me, and I see that's you! I have to get back on sufu! The Dragonfly looks good!

cgmblade - Thanks for the recommendations, I might try the Tenacious.

Flatlander1963 - I actually prefer smaller knives for my urban edc. My too, and I realize that's where I'd save some weight. Maybe because my EDC lately has been an Al Mar Ultralight...

JTR357 - I see that frn is a light handle material, thanks!

npueppke - yes, I forgot about the lightness of G-10 - for years I've been carrying jigged bone slipjoints.

Deacon - I saw some reviews, and that Calypso Jr. looks awesome and is well regarded as a superior slicer. I'll keep an eye out!

Gunmike1 - Nice to know about Tom Krein from your Avatar - I may use his services some day!!

Deacon's on the money here yet again, Sounds like the Caly Jr or Cento 4 will suit you perfectly.

Bo.

I have an Orange UKPK and love it as an EDC. You definitely will feel the same.

how thick is the UKPK blade compared to, say, a centofante blade, at the spine? Absolutely in love with the thin Wharnie of my centofante 4.

I read the specs on Spyderco's site, and the Centofante is 2mm, whereas the UKPK is 3mm....

Scroll thru Spyderco's site. Noone makes more full flat grind folders than they do. It's a huge strength of their line.
