Dang.....
For my very first post, I was going to mention a freebie knife that I really like. It's small, sharp, and the price was right. It probably won't hold an edge very long, but I can always sharpen it. I have a carbon fiber folder with VG-10 blade that I thought was pretty awesome until I started poking around this forum. I got it from the AG Russell factory store around Springdale.

I do have some awesome knives. You guys wouldn't be impressed, but my grandad gave me a folder every summer when we went to visit him. He's been gone a long time, but I think of him every time I see one of them. He was a knife swapper. I got a couple of his old Hen and Rooster knives after he passed away. They were actually given to him by my dad (long ago), which is really cool.

I joined this forum to learn about knives....because I ran into a guy in northern Arkansass that makes knives (reading here, that's apparently pretty common). This guy wants $300-700 per knife. I thought it might be a deal, but now I'm not so sure. I've seen knives on here for sale that are just as nice, if not even nicer. I didn't know enough to ask what kind of metal he used. Heck, he probably told me and I don't recall because I didn't recognize what it was. Now I feel like I need to call him and ask a lot of questions. He did have a fancy heat treater oven thing. I do remember that he buys the metal and does all his work with a file. He had a lot of handle materials. His last name was Mobbs, if anyone knows anything about his knives.....I'd love a heads up.

I feel like a tool reading these techy questions and answers you guys give. I'm reading as quickly as I can, to gain some knowledge.

If you see me posting some ridiculously newbie questions....please keep walking and just chuckle quietly. :)

Well, that's my intro. I gotta go read another 3000 threads so I can finally find the ultimate kitchen knife and a small EDC.

No one is gonna pick on you here.
And the fact that those knives belonged to your grandfather and have been passed down is better than any knife you can buy.

I think almost everyone started out the same place you are...
I don't know anything about the maker you speak of,, but what I looked for when looking to spend a bit of money on my first "high end" fixed blade,, was a great reputation and an Unconditional Lifetime warranty from a company that has been around and will be around.
That being said,, theres no way you could be dissapointed with an Esee, Bark River,, or any of the Busse/swamprat/scrapyard blades.
Not a knock on the maker,, but that is A LOT of money for a knife,,,
Good luck man,, just know that you could spend anywhere from 100 to 200 and get a GREAT knife!!!!
Try reputable dealers, Blade HQ, Knives ship free,, DLT trading,, many more

Vg10 is actually a really good steel.

Hen and Rooster's are not terrible slipjoints either, most are still German made I believe, (some may just be assembled there, and some are made in Spain), and the sentimental quality is second to none...

Keep reading and keep learning... I'm with rcb2000 though, for a (intro) fixed blade, look for an established reputable company with a solid warranty 1st, there are plenty to choose from; kabar/Becker, benchmade, even Buck to add to his list. Then go custom when you're more familiar with what's what, what you prefer, and what you're looking for more specifically; metal, handles, grind, etc.

Thank you for the welcomes! Hopefully, in a year or two, maybe I'll be able to contribute something useful.

I'll check those out, now that I'm learning so much. I'm much more informed now. As far as warranty...well, he's an older fella working in his house....so....I'd say it's probably around 5-10 years (from a practical standpoint of how long he may be able/willing to keep doing this, I'm not predicting his death).

I've just started reading the long thread about steel comparisons. I'll look at that app once I get a better understanding of a few of these.

I've seen how that works. lol

Wilie TX huh? Been there of course since I used to live in Garland and Richardson. Welcome. I think you may be able to contribute quicker than you think as there are a lot of sub-forums and it isn't just knives. People don't pick on you unless you contribute something stupid, and then all bets are off. But it is generally in good fun. Read. Relax. Enjoy.

This right here^. I would trade all the fancy knives I have right now for that old SAK my grandfather had. After he passed it was put it away for me to have one day. Some 25 years ago our house was robbed over Thanksgiving weekend. Filthy thieves found and took it. OP, you are lucky to have them!

Welcome to the fun house! We're all a little mad here, but I'll tell you a secret, most decent people are.

Anyway, I'd love to see a picture of that A. G. Russell Carbon Fiber knife you picked up. Interested to see what model it is. I'm from the NW Arkansas area, and check out A. G. Russell's store every chance I get, when I visit my folks. You should check out his online store, as well.

I need to put them together, maybe in some sort of case. It's awful that someone stole your knife, I really dislike thieves.

I"m heading to Tulsa with the family tonight, my wife is coming by the office to pick me up after work. As luck would have it, that knife is the one I keep in my small suitcase. I'll post a pic tonight or tomorrow at the latest. It's small, very thin, and terribly light. Here is a quick pic of it, in post #22 of this thread......http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...s-folder-for-under-75?p=12166088#post12166088
