Hello friendly folks!

After untold hours spent perusing the forum I thought it was about time I made a contribution. Included are two photos of my firt attempted restoration. We are visiting my grandparents in Mississippi and a few days ago decided to dig around in the barn my grandfather and his father built together. Sure enough we found a Plumb broad axe head and a badly rusted double bit that is unmarked.

I let the double bit sit in some vinegar over night and then got busy for most of the day to get down to clean steel. The results were far more rewarding than I had anticipated! I owe a huge thank you to everyone here who has shared their wealth of knowledge with us. This project is for you!

Thanks

Here is a shot of the double bit, the Plumb broad axe, a coping saw, and two single bits. One of which is a wwetterlings! (the one that has some of the haft still in the eye). Anyone have any ideas on what the double bit would be? I know it's probably a shot in the dark, but just wondered if anybody knew right off the bat who may have made it just from the photo.

Thanks again!

I scrubbed it with varrying degrees of steel wool starting with the coarsest I could find then working my way down to 100 grit sandpaper. This method worked quite well on he first side but the other had twice as much rust and some bad pitting in areas, so I used a dremel with a light grinding drum to break down the worst parts.

That's a beautiful restoration, thanks for posting. I can't wait to see what you do with that broad axe!

Welcome Radtron
Great job on the double bit, looks great, thanks for the post.

Best regards

Robin
