First production knives

OK first let me start by saying a knife is ment to be used I know. I have no problem using a dicontinued knife of flipping a rare BM bali, but I just got a first production run of the skirmish in mint condition with box. It has first production 0196/1000 on the blade. My question is should I use this knife or should I buy a current model since they are in prodution at this time. Thanks for any input.

Use it. It is a production knife and not worth all that much (not that no production knife is worth much). It is more valuable as a user than as a collector item. As a user, a Skirmish is good, useful, and strong. As a collectors item, even a First Production Run Skirmish is pretty useless.

"First Production Run" *usually* doesn't mean anything other than being some extra words to scrape off the blade during use. Putting "First Production Run" on the blade doesn't make a common, user-grade knife into something that should be a safe queen.

Use it to appreciate it. Buy a real collector's knife if you want a safe queen.

I have a first production run 710HSS. It's a safe queen and I use one of 4 other M2 steel knives I have. Usually Stryker goes out first, though the Ritter M2 mini is really growing on me. It's numbered also, but this is just this years batch I think. I darn sure could be wrong on that. Joe

This question gets asked pretty often and the answer is almost always that the numbered knives are not worth more than the ones that are not marked. I'm a bit of a collector of Benchmades and to me they are worth more. If I have the choice of buying two knives of the same model I'll pick the numbered one everytime.

I have to agree, use it. There really is not that much of a premium (if any) to a first run production knife. My current EDC is a numbered Ritter Mini. Yeah maybe I would choose the numbered knife if there were two identical (except for the number)knives in front of me, but I wouldn't pay extra for the opportunity. Steven

i would say use it, just because i'm greedy, and life is short, and i don't want to die without wringing all the pleasure i can out of life, and there is nothing like the feeling of using a high quality blade...

Thanks a lot guys, I guess I just needed to know I wasnt being ignorent about this, so thanks for sheading some light on the subject.

Have a 610 Rukus, First Run Production 0388/1000. It's been used, and somewhat abused. I like to use my "tools", so first run, second run, whatever, if I buy it, I'll use it. Might think twice if it's a custom however.
