First production runs

I have a questions about early production runs. I own two knives that are stamped with a production number - a Boker A-F Combat Knife (stamped 559 out of an unknown production run) and a SOG Desert Dagger Special Edition (stamped 14 out of a production run of about 150). Obviously the DD is the more desirable of the two due to the reduced number of avaiable units. What I'm wondering is this: Is the stamp on the Boker just a marketing gimmick (as a marketer myself, I'm always on the lookout for marketing ploys), or is it part of some sort of limited production run?

I can only tell you from my consumer eyes.

Unless it is a true limited production, I don't see any advantage in getting a first production run on a regular production model.

For me, I like to see the "kinks" worked out, and the refinements worked in before I buy a production anything.

In marketing terms, I am NOT an "early adopter". I'm somewhere between late adopter and laggard!
