First Production Runs.

So I just wondered...

I have a First Production Buck Strider Tanto Folder...never used it.

Then I recently got a First Production Rat-1 folder and Benchmade Lum Dejavoo.

On the one hand it's a blessing to get a first production run, but also a curse. I never want to use them.

How do you all feel about getting a blade marked first production run?

Use it. In reality 99.9% of the time it will not be worth anymore. Plus any knife worth its salt is meant to be used. Enjoy it. I buy knives to use and enjoy. I have never regretted using a knife.

As an opposing view, from an erstwhile dealer.....WITH papers, and in mint condition, I ADD 5-15% value to first production runs....

On a knife that goes for $100.00, this adds $5.00-$15.00. That may be chicken feed to some, but it also helps get the knife sold...which unsold knife is a very real possibility.

Since I buy knives for accumulating (rarely for using), I like to buy First Production Run knives and have several from AG Russell, Buck, etc. I think the First Production models are more in demand, as collectors find them more interesting. On most though, I haven't noticed a significant price difference on the resale market - depends on the brand and model of course.

For example, I just saw a mint AG Russell 1st Production Featherlite sell for less than the cost of a brand new regular production Featherlite. And I have two First Production Buck Nighthawks with display stands that cost the same as buying a new Nighthawk at WalMart.

If I wanted a knife to use and carry, I would not buy a First Production - I'd leave it for a collector who will appreciate the knife's background.

I have a 1st Production Run Bark River Bravo-1. I use it like it's a cheap knife (which it aint)
((:D))

First production runs are not worth any more second hand. Especially from Benchmade and Buck. The only ones that are worth more are knives with limited runs below 100 total ,where there is an actual difference in them from the production model. Benchmade does a First or Preproduction on virtually every knife they produce and they don't change anything. In fact the early releases usually have more defects that have to be worked out later in the run.
