well got my profile finished of my first knife....and I must say one thing....belt sanders effin hurt!

Doing a modified loveless drop point hunter without a guard. Now I gotta figure out how to get my plunge cuts done and get the bevels ground down :o

bwitty,

Start your grinding forward of where you want the plunges by at least a 1/4". After grinding to 120 grit you can work on the plunges.

Filing with a safety edge is good. Loveless book shows how.

I've learned to do them on the grinder after the blade is ground. But I'm weird.

There's a lot of methods, all good, all take practice.

and; a little bit of 'just intuition' will also help you in the long run. Be confident and purposeful, in that regardless of number of attempts you will get it right. As time goes by less time consuming measurements and more eye balling based on your past experience will take over. It will come and sooner than you can think now. Patience and determination are the most important things to have now.

You will do fine.

Byron, when I am profiling I wear gloves. Any other time the belt speeds are pretty low, so an occasional scuffing of the knuckles is tolerable. I buy a dozen pair of leather gloves from just about any industrial supply house for cheap cheap money... like $1.50 apiece. Well worth the investment. And *knocks on wood* I don't get too many belt-related injuries that way.
