First proper knife ordered. What this n00b chose and why.

This is my first post and I know jack about knives. My only folder and EDC (besides various multitools) is a CRKT M16-13Z. I don't like the chisel edge, but then it was bought for SD primarily so that's not a big issue. The point-down clip orientation makes the clip useless to me. Otherwise, I like it fine given its price and Taiwanese extraction -- it's reasonably sturdy and pointy and easy to open with one hand.

I considered large folders -- Skirmish, Rukus, Maxx and the like -- but in the end decided that the EDC size-related discomfort was not worth the increase (over a smaller folder) in combative value.

Moving on to the smaller size category, the primary contenders were the mini Skirmish and Rukus, the Kershaw Blur variant with the premier steel, various Emersons, the other BM Axis offerings, and whatever else I'm forgetting.

The evaluation criteria were projected (this is all sight unseen, after all) ease of one-handed deployment, thrust-friendly blade and grip geometry, EDC-friendly dimensions, lock reliability, aesthetics, and blade <4" is a plus for interstate travel.

The Blur is appealing and affordable, and I will likely get one in the future. The mini Skirmish is appealing in all respects but the point-down clip. The Emersons.. well.. I like the Wave idea a lot but the chisel edge is a turn-off. The mini Rukus was a very close second choice.

In the end, I went for the 710 D2. Although the grip is not as combat-oriented as that of the Rukus, I suspect its shape will be easier to EDC, and the blade is a bit longer to boot. In addition, the 710 is perfectly proportioned aesthetically, whereas the Rukus looks all-business.

Anyway, if the wife doesn't bobbitize me first with the aforementioned 710, I will be looking at getting the nice-blade Blur and the large Rukus some time in the future, and then who knows. The guns are bad enough, and now knives? This does not bode well...

BM 710D2 your first knife?
Well you sure got that right.

And welcome to BladeForums. :)

The 710 was a very very good choice. An awsome knife and a perfect edc for a lot of people including myself. I have two 710s one with bk coating which is my user and a 710 pe with no coating which is a back up in case BM ever stops producing them for some strange reason hehe.

Of the other knives you mentioned i have the mini skirmish which i find to be a very nice knife. I really like mine and if you ever change your mind it is definatly worth the cost imo. Hope you enjoy your new friend and buy more knives in the future, gl=D

I have to say that you made a great choice in the 710! I have owned 2 of them (1 in 154cm that I traded and the other D2, I use a lot).

Great choice, I bought one a few months back as my first "real" knife as well. It's an amazing knife.

Absolutely. That's an exemplary choice for a "first proper knife." If everyone started with something as good as the 710, there'd be a lot more committed knife nuts out there.

Also, welcome to the forum!

The 710 is indeed a good knife. I had one that I wish I had not sold. That and the Spyderco Military are two that took me a while to understand how good they are. I would suggest a Spyderco Military but you don't like tip down carry.

I had a CRKT M-16Z fail on me. The liner lock failed badly and I probably would have been cut had I not been wearing gloves. It sheared off some metal from the liner and let the blade close. I sent it back to CRKT and they gave me a new one which I gave away. I gave it to the guy I wrk with because he never uses a knife for anything more than cutting string or thin plastic so I am not worried that he will ever hurt himself with it. I would retire that CRKT knife if I were you and stick with BM or Spyderco for self defense.

Thanks, everyone. Without this forum and other enthusiast sites, I would have had little to go on.

As for getting other knives, I will have to pace myself, but I can readily see how this can get addictive.
