This is my first post and I know jack about knives. My only folder and EDC (besides various multitools) is a CRKT M16-13Z. I don't like the chisel edge, but then it was bought for SD primarily so that's not a big issue. The point-down clip orientation makes the clip useless to me. Otherwise, I like it fine given its price and Taiwanese extraction -- it's reasonably sturdy and pointy and easy to open with one hand.
I considered large folders -- Skirmish, Rukus, Maxx and the like -- but in the end decided that the EDC size-related discomfort was not worth the increase (over a smaller folder) in combative value.
Moving on to the smaller size category, the primary contenders were the mini Skirmish and Rukus, the Kershaw Blur variant with the premier steel, various Emersons, the other BM Axis offerings, and whatever else I'm forgetting.
The evaluation criteria were projected (this is all sight unseen, after all) ease of one-handed deployment, thrust-friendly blade and grip geometry, EDC-friendly dimensions, lock reliability, aesthetics, and blade <4" is a plus for interstate travel.
The Blur is appealing and affordable, and I will likely get one in the future. The mini Skirmish is appealing in all respects but the point-down clip. The Emersons.. well.. I like the Wave idea a lot but the chisel edge is a turn-off. The mini Rukus was a very close second choice.
In the end, I went for the 710 D2. Although the grip is not as combat-oriented as that of the Rukus, I suspect its shape will be easier to EDC, and the blade is a bit longer to boot. In addition, the 710 is perfectly proportioned aesthetically, whereas the Rukus looks all-business.
Anyway, if the wife doesn't bobbitize me first with the aforementioned 710, I will be looking at getting the nice-blade Blur and the large Rukus some time in the future, and then who knows. The guns are bad enough, and now knives? This does not bode well...
