Well, I'm taking advantage of the 4 year wait and the deposit system. I'm gonna drop down $20 and save $10+ a month and hopefully by the time I'm a junior in college, I'll have paid off the Randall in time for delivery. So should it be a Randall 1 or 14? I'm having trouble deciding whether to get Micarta or Leather. (I like the buttcap)

I'd go 14 and micarta, if it will see heavy use. You can't go wrong with either. I'd go with micarta no matter which model you buy, it tends to age better than leather.

Here's a neat fact, Bo Randall's favorite model was the 3-6".

Green micarta rocks. More power to you, GarageBoy. I wish I had pants made of that stuff.

Dark green, although they'll use any color as long as it meets their standard and you supply it before hand( I'm not sure if it adds to the order time if you want a custom color).

Check out www.treemanknives.com to check out custom micarta Randalls, he also supplies micarta approved by Randall.

Offhand, I think that(buttcap) is a small cost option. I'd e-mail the Randall folks, and ask. I'd also ask about guard options, in case you want the guard to match the buttcap.

GarageBoy,
Get one of their paper catalogs before you order if you dont have one. There are all kinds of options available and its fun to look at.

Your most important consideration: Define the intended usage of the knife. The answer to that will directly tell you whether the Randall model 1, model 14, or some other model is the knife to choose.

Little story for ya: A friend of mine wanted a fighter blade and was determined to get a Randall in spite of the lengthy wait. So he emailed the factory and asked which model they felt would make the best blade for a fighting knife. He got back an email that simply read in its entirety, "model 1". Brief and to the point.

And that is the good and bad of the Randall model 1 -- it is a specialized blade. It is very neutrally balanced and quick in the hand. If you have use or need for a fighting knife for hand-to-hand combat, the model 1 is a mighty good choice. I know that there are those who have used the model 1 through the years as a camp knife, kitchen knife, farm knife, butchering knife, fillet knife, workplace knife, etc. But the Randall #1 is a fighting knife in its soul.

I had a standard configuration Randall #1-7 (01 tool steel & leather washer handle with double-quillioined guard & buttcap). I called it "deadly air" since it was so quick and light, it was as if your hand held nothing but air. Nonetheless, I sold it. I just don't anticipate needing a quick 'n lively fighter blade anytime soon in my rather sedate life.

I likewise had a Randall #14 with the Griffen single-finger handle. The Griffen is my favorite Randall handle style! However I sold it too. I have lower-cost beater blades in that size window that would have kept the Randall model 14 sequestered in a safe or drawer forever. So it went to a home where it's hopefully seeing some use. Bo Randall intended for his blades to be used!

Among the other Randall models, the one I've always thought to be a beauty is the model 25 with its leather-stag-leather layered handle. The Randall I wished I'd bought when I found it available but didn't is the #5-5 Bradford Angier model.

Bottom line: If you want a fighting knife, get the model 1. Otherwise, get the model 14.

HTH.

Does the Cold Steel R1 balance like the Randall? I wont be able to handle a Randall before I buy

Order now and decide later... When I ordered my Randall they told me that I could make any change to the order up until 6 months prior to it's delivery date and I did once without penalty. So I would inquire if they still allow that.

Your randall choices are entirely personal but don't worry so much about how leather wears, hard use or not, unless ofcourse you live in a jungle. Personally I'm partial to natural materials and high carbon blades.. I like things that age.. You can get a brass butt on your green mircarta and that should look very nice.

I ended up buying a model 5, 01 Carbon 6" blade, leather border patrol handle, brass but, thong hole, brass/black spacers and a model C sheath.. Went a little nuts on the extras but I'm a weak man and it's pretty...... :) It is a total user but well cared for, I've had it for three years now and it's been in a half dozen deer an one elk and the odd beef steak. Works really well as a general purpose camp knife..

But if I was to do it over again, I'd buy two knives instead of one.

A Model 1, 01 carbon, 7", leather commando handle, brass rounded butt, brass and black spacres, thong hole and model C sheath.

And a model 25, 6" 01 carbon with a brass rounded butt and brass spacers.

And I would use them both for hunting and camping etc... There are enough randalls in safes.
