hey guys,

I'm curious what people consider the best starting point for a Swamp Rat?

The store has some mini-Mojos in and these look good, but what is considered to be a classic Rat/s?

I would like something that can be carried under a coat in a urban environment if necessary. All the Rats I've seen look quite large... are they pretty much intended for the outdoors only?

Thanks

Mark

I would say that most SRKW blades are a bit large for 'urban' wear but a Howling Rat LM or maybe a RatManDu might get by in more tolerant areas. (check some of their older models) They make a few smaller blades but they are only available at Knife Shows or on the secondary market.

I've just been through the pic thread and I like the Ratweiler BIG TIME... also the Desert Rat.

What are the odds of these making an appearance?

Let me guess... prolly zero, right?

The new version of the Ratweiler will be out soon, but I think the Desert Rat is long gone.

Story of my life.... :D

I actually really dig the mini-Mojo, but I doubt I would carry it that much.

Pity they don't make an even smaller version of it.

What would be the SR equivalent of the Leaner Meaner Street, for example?

A Rat Hunter is also a great small knife, but will be hard to come by. You could always post a Wnated to buy thread...

The RatManDu is a little big for EDC, but makes a great do-most-anything urban knife.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input...

I've been doing some research (ie drooling) into the past line-up and the SAR Rat and Rat Hunter have caught my eye.

The INFI-coot is also way cool. I also like the earlier gen Howling Rat, with the smaller choil. Or, if I'm allowed to dream - one of these: http://216.69.138.190/images/ClipPoint.jpg

I guess I need to do some serious lurking on the Exchange.

BTW a mint Battle Rat has just been posted there FYI

The Rat Hunter and the Desert Rat are very pretty in pictures. They have great lines.... and they are both nice.
But, IMO, the HRLM and the Ratmandu are two of the best smaller designs to have come from Swamp Rat.

The Ratmandu (RMD) is a little big for most people to EDC.

I would probably say the HRLM is a little big as well (chunky), but it is a great all-around user knife and one of the better 4" (4inch-ish - 4.125") blade knives ever made! (Although, IMO, the choil needs some modifying.... I modded mine.) The Rat Hunter is a little smaller.

There are a lot of "Large" knives from Swamp Rat that are justified in being called "Classics":

Battle Rat
Rat Daddy
Rat Mastiff
Ratweiler
Camp Tramp

The (possibly to come someday) Ratweiler Chopper should likely be a Classic as well. I think I might like the new chopper more than the original Ratweiler. I am just hoping for a decent handle!

I am also personally very fond of the Bog Dog! It feels great in the hand, is super light and a great design in general. But, it is now hard to come by and may be a little long for most people to EDC.

(*** The SS4 from Scrap Yard is smaller, but uses the same "Mudder Grips" as the Bog Dog, but the SS4 comes in INFI!!! and is a great EDC knife!!!)

The New Skeleton Warden coming from Swamp Rat should be a great EDC knife. I am very interested, but personally, I don't generally care for the feel of skeleton handles in my hand (????) ... we'll see. In any event, it looks like it will be fairly classic and should be a good EDC size.

Good luck!
