First *real* bali?

Ive been flipping my jags for quite some time now, and after a bit of work i will say they are *decent* knives. I repinned, did some latch repairs, filled in the tang pin "cups" and sharpened them up nice. Its been all i need in a bali...i wont carry one(damn laws) so i just sit in my house and flip. Ive decided its time i ditch the cheapo's...

I wanted a 42, pretty much the standard knife out there...everyone owns one, pretty good price, and very nice knife. However, with the new ones that recently hit the market (SWAT, 43, 47, and im sure some others that i dont know about...)

I'll admit, i dont know jack about balis, i visit this site about once every 3 days, just skimming through posts, and picking up small things along the way. I dont know the exact details of the new BM's, but the 43s are pretty cheap already and i *think* the 47 is too.

What would you guys recomend as a first good bali? I know you people are in love with your big bladed, thick handled customs, which i do like(got to flip one monster of a custom, dont ask me what kind, cause i have no clue:)) but it was nice. However, when im on my property, i will carry this knife, as its the best utility knife known to man(which im sure your all aware of:D) and dont want a monster of a knife hauling my pants down. I'd LOVE a 3" bladed 42...but that isnt a possibility:(

Ok, enough of my rambling, down to the questions:

Is there a small QUALITY knife, for a cheap price somewhere? It seems from pics the 43 is a little smaller, but that might be my eyes playing tricks on me)

Or should i just buy a 42, and go with the flow of everyone else(i hate that...)

Also, some info on the 43 and 47 would be nice.

PS, i DONT want a tanto, as i absolutly LOVE that style blade, it isnt practical for me

Thanks for listening to my ramblings, please help a 15 year old with little to no income find a great knife:)

Thanks a lot!

Been there, done that:)

Im not much of the person to decide on reviews..i'd like personal opinions of people...dont know why, just how i am. Chuck has a great site...

Oh, one more question, but the Benchmades all come with sheaths right? Sorry...iggnorant bali flipper:)

I think the rest is just left up to prefferences. I have all three blade types. Personally I like tantos so I'd choose the 47. I actually went with the 47A. I just couldn't resist the blue handles.:D Otherwise I'd say they all perform equally well.

While my opinion probably differs from yours (& everybody else's), since you asked here it is on some I own:

BM42 - This one is still my favorite, despite pressure from the 43

BM43 - While I love the Collver clip point Bowie, it has not surpassed the Weehawk on the 42, for me

SWAT brass handled - Probably the "smoothest" operating bali I own, a finely made knife that I love to fondle! I prefer it to the aluminum handled SWAT, but, unfortunately, I don't care for the blade profile, it's a little larger than I like, and it's a little heavy for daily carry ...

The only Tanto I own is a Bear Damascus one, I don't really care for that blade profile. The blade on my 43 is pretty much the same length as my 42. Unlike many, I am looking forward to the smaller blade on the Tachyon.

Bottom line, if I could only keep one, it would be the BM42A.

I'll probably get castrated for this...but i think the Tachyon is butt ugly. Being from MT, im sure its a GREAT knife, but i cant stand to look at it.

Im trying to decide if i want SS handles or Ti, the SS is quite a bit heavier, but i dont think it should be too bad...plus i like to flip that more....

I'll probably just head down to the local knife store and flip a few, see what i like best.

I'll probably get a Ti handled 42, with the plain handles (i dont like the blue)

Thanks a lot guys, you've all helped a bunch.

well I can't wait to get my tachyon.

but at this point, if I were you I'd go with either a 42, 43, or 47. It's just a matter of blade profile preference

If it's SS you prefer, then you may want to consider (if you haven't already) the new SS Monarch that Knife Mart is coming out with later this month. There are some threads here that you've probably already seen about it. Sounds like they are doing it right.

To answer your other question, I expect that all the BM balis come with the sheath, the new 43 (pre-ordered from a local dealer) came with the same sheath I've gotten via mail order on 42's.

I actually really like the looks of the Tachyon. Also, the BM anodized handles grew on me ... at first I preferred the plain handles, but now if I could only keep one it would be with the anodized handles ... and I'm really looking forward to feeling the texture of the black powder-coated handles. It's pretty amazing all the choices we have this summer & fall! :)
