Hi all, this is my first post, I've been stalking the forum for a few weeks and I decided my birthday is coming up, and I still have some money left from my winter camp paycheck, so I can afford myself one present of my choosing (parent's aren't real big on knives...).

So here's my dilema, BK 2, BK 11, or something else (really do want a decent sized becker, I like the 1095CV). What I'm looking for is usability teaching Wilderness Survival, back country first aid improv (merit badge grade, not certifications), either a horizontal carry or dropped vertical carry with a leg strap and room for a ferro rod on the sheath.

One more thing I should note is that want to attach a survival kit to it, I already have most of the stuff, just not the pouch.

All this for a price point of a meager and rather pitiful $70...

Any recommendations?

Welcome oXide!
I am new here too and loving it, I hope you do as well. I got a BK2 for Christmas and love the thing. It's a beast! If you want something between the BK2 and the BK11 I would suggest waiting until April and getting a BK16, as it's basically a smaller version of the BK2, but larger than the 11. Just my two cents. You will not go wrong either way, though.

Howdy & Welcome

Sounds like you know what you want in a knife, and you're describing the BK2!

You should easily find a BK2 for under 70$ shipped, I just did.

I think it would serve you well in all your woods adventures...but at the risk of sounding like an old grump.....please make sure your parents know and approve of the purchase.

Thank you both for the warm welcome. Any idea what the price point on the 16 is gonna come out to? Also, what can I do to a campanion to give it storage for a ferro rod other than ranger bands?

Welcome, oXide - I'd recommend waiting for the tweeners too - the BK16 sounds like exactly what you're looking for, AND it will be shipping with a sheath that has an accessory pouch.

The BK2 sheaths aren't anything fancy. But if you wait 'til Purim you'll be able to afford a custom sheath with all the fixings for it too. :D

Ok, just 2 questions, first one is about the BK 16, what color is the sheath (don't wanna clean a big red clay stain off of it)? Second, what does Purim mean?

Thank you for the links, very nice sheath compared to what I was afraid of (a really light tan, boy scout camps down here even turn black cloth red with all the clay). You said April was when it'll hit shelves (local and online?), any idea what time in April, I kind of need to really budget my money right now.

Edit: Any ideas or recommendations on where to get a leg strap for this? I don't want to run around camp whacking my leg with my own knife, sheathed or not.

Edit 2: Those SkyStorm sheaths are really nice, but that's also part of the problem, nice means fairly expensive (for someone with only a seasonal job, me) and also means I don't want to bring it out to camp where it can get destroyed. The knife I'm not worried about breaking, that I think is pretty near unbreakable even with MAJOR abuse.

If you can only have one, get a bk2. Them look up the sheath mod threads. You can strap on a pouch to the stock sheath pretty easily and inexpensively.

No way to know for sure when, as April is just an estimate. Probably not 4/1.

As for a leg strap, if you're on a budget you could just use paracord, although shock cord would probably be even better as it stretches.

The BK15, 16, or 17 will have the nicest stock sheath. I wouldn't worry about getting it dirty/ stained. The stock BK2 sheath is not bad, though most people who keep it will modify it at least a little.

I bet you could dye that bk16 sheath.

I vote BK2. Take off the belt loop and put on a large Tek Lok. Then use two 1/2" cable clamps for a firesteel holder (I got this idea from this site). Thats my cheap solution for now.

BK2 is a great all-rounder of a knife. It's not a dedicated chopper but it chops VERY well for a 5" blade. It's not a whittler but it whittles VERY well for a 5" blade. It's a bit thick but that's all the better to baton with, my dear. I agree with the other poster that said if you're getting only one, get the BK2.

I have the BK11 as well, and honestly use it more than my BK2 - mostly be because its smaller and convenient to carry in more situations but if you told me I could keep only one of those, it would be the BK2. There's just a wider range of things that it will do well or well enough.

the bk2 should do nicely, and if you hate it, resell well...

plus you can then budget for other stuff

and welcome

Don't worry about breaking a sheath, Leather takes a lot more abuse than plastic. Give it a little oil now and then and some sno-seal or beeswax and forget about it. Besides if you do somehow break it I will fix it. I'd probably go with a 14, or wait for a tweener.

Welcome aboard!

I'm gonna play devils advocate and go against the bk2 for teaching wilderness training. My only reasoning behind this is that the smaller the knife in the training, the larger the training. Being able to do more with less is a vital aspect of wilderness or survival training. If you can do it with a small knife, then when your out with a bk2 the tasks will be a cake walk.
So I'd vote for a bk14 or 11 which ever handle you like better, and a custom kydex with an esee pouch attached for your kit. I forgot which Guy around here makes those for fairly reasonable prices.

Then go buy a bk5 and a Skystorm dangler and revel in its awesomeness.

Scrape up a few extra bucks and buy both. Problem solved. I own both and would recommend both. I got the BK-11 first and HAD to get the BK-2. I'm sure if I had got the BK-2 first, I would have HAD to get the BK-11. Dont be that guy who wants what he didn't get. Just get them both and be done with this quandry. You'll be glad you did!
