So thanks to kvaughn and Curt Hal I have a couple of heads coming my way. Rather than messing up something that may be nice after some work, I decided to try refinishing a piece that I had in the shed. Granted it's not an axe, but I figure I would learn some of the first time screw ups. Critiques welcome
What I started with

So after 120 and 220 using an orbital sander on the flat of the blade

After wet sanding with 600 and honing oil (still only on the flat)

Now I move to the bevel.
Order of work
1. Double cut bastard file
2. Mill file
3. 80, 120, 220 dry. 600, 1200 wet.

After three coats of perma blue

All hand sanding was done with scrap wood as a block.
What I learned:
Deep cuts with the file are a pain.
Get everything to the same point before moving on.
