I have been reading up on axes for awhile and decided to a restoration. I purchased this Collins 3 1/2 head mostly based on price and I liked the look of it. So I started researching it and I haven't really found much on it. The head is stamped Collins with the rectangle box around it, and next to that is stamped 3 1/2. Since I am still a newb and haven't figured out how to post pics yet, I put a link at the bottom to the exact head I bought. On yesteryearstools Collins part 2 under specialty markings all I found was this. "Collins used the Legitimus impression while on others they used the name Collins within a rectangular box. Others, believed to have been used in the early part of the 1900s were marked with the name R. King." That doesn't really tell me much. I also used the search function here and didn't find anything significant regarding the stamp or pattern. So did I do ok? Or did i buy a cool looking paper weight. Thanks

I'd say post WW2 personally. It looks exactly like a Mann era Collins I had, except mine had the M 3 1/2 stamp. Good axe still!

no picture from your op,
but i have a couple of the 3-1/2lb. COLLINS axes
very good steel, well formed, symmetrical, excellent eyes.
also i have a small hatchet with the rectangle COLLINS logo stamp, this is one of my favorite bench hatchets, a real good little axe.
i've not come across a Collins i did not like.
i'd say my Collins axes are Michigan type pattern

If it has the weight on there, it is post 1966 when Mann took over Collins and the quality went straight down hill. The ones marked with M, there is some debate, as to whether those were made in Mexico or meant that Mann made it. In order to tell for sure I would need to see a better pic.
