The trick is to volunteer to buy the first round. Go for a high-end domestic or a decent import - nothing too fancy, but enough to make whoever buys the next round feel obliged to stay at the same level or even one-up you, so as not to appear cheap or unsophisticated. If all goes well, after a few pitchers, you should be drinking the premium stuff.
