A few weeks ago I posted about making a strop with some horsehide. I have an old Loray guided system that did me just fine UNTIL I JOINED THIS DAMN SITE!!!!! Now that passion for knives I had as a kid is back. I pulled out my newly glued, but damn ugly, strop and gave it a try after the Loray. Now I've got bald spots on my left arm. And a slowly building desire to get some stones and learn freehand.

Thanks all for the help!

One of the more frustrating things about sharpening for me, is waiting for the hair on my arm to grow back. :p

Congratulations!

I was in the same boat when I joined a similar site. My problem was that I couldn't maintain a consistent angle for freehanding. TO cure this problem I built a sharpening wedge that sets the angle of the stones for you. Think of a ceramic rod system only for bench stones that works on a horizontal plane instead of vertical. It worked amazingly and in one day I was getting tha scary sharpness that everyone was talking about. The guy who designed it will actually make you one if you ask him or you can make your own. I don't know what his username is here on blade forums (though I know he frequents it) but on the spyderco forum his name is Unit and he is a most helpful guy if you need help in sharpening. Anyway, I've rambled long enough. Here's a link to his video about the wedge: http://www.youtube.com/user/ewerstruly#p/c/299E614F6D3C94DD/9/qeWmD5ATBKE

I need to make one of those.^

Heres an idea I came up with. I replaced the ceramic rods with chromium oxide loaded wood dowels. Use like a strop. This works.

Thanks all!
All the hair is gone on my left arm and instead of switching hands I took the edge to a spot on my chest... My girlfriend drew the line there. She said there is no way shes staying with a guy with a shaved chest!!!!!!!

I REALLY like that one. If you came up with that on your own, you are one smart little(big?) man(woman?)... :D

My solution to this is to get a small baggie of hair from the local salon. All my hair whittling testing needs for a year or so are now taken care off. :D

Nope, I just got tired of waiting for my arm and leg hair to grow back and pulling my own hair out. I washed the hair and put it in the sun to dry.

I like it! Not sure how my gf would react if I showed up with a bag of hair though.

he he if you are the real adventurist type, get some hair from the salon that is different than your wife/GF and leave it somewhere around the house! I guess only if you are looking for a way out!

Yeah that kinda grosses me out as well.

An alternative to this would be to save up your own hair next time you get a haircut. Much less ick factor knowing it's your hair and not somebody else's. Assuming of course that you use shampoo everyday:D.

if you are really getting in to it and want a sharp edge fast, you should seriously try a paper wheel system. cost=25-35 bucks and I can nearly gaurentee you that it will give you an edge sharper then your current one in a fraction of the time.

I cut my hair short and cut it often. Half inch hairs are not too good for testing. Anyway all this hair belonged to a nice lady who decided to have a change of style. It's from one person. I don't have a problem with that. :D
