First Sebenza. Seeking advice.

Hey Gang,

Joel from Australia here.

I'm in the market for my first Sebenza and am looking at the Plain Jane Small Seb21.
I'd also love a Sebenza 25 but they are controlled by customs here. And the small amount that do come in sell for $850+

I firstly wanted to know wether the double thumb lugs are worth the extra $30 or so dollars on the Small 21's. For those that do own double thumb lug sebenzas do you use both sides?

I also wanted to seek a pic of the blue lug versions next to a silver hardware lug version for comparison. Which do you guys prefer?

I'm not too keen on the blue if it's going to wear off. Is it fairly durable?

This will be my EDC knife for general chores. Nothing specific.

Much appreciate any help/info or pics you guys can offer.

Thankyou

Joel

I like silver better than blue. The blue will eventually wear off. If you are not left handed then there really is no need for dual thumb studs.

Hi Joel,

I would say if you like the look of the double thumb studs then they might be worth it, I agree that for utility unless you are left handed that they aren't worth it. The blue isn't really durable, it will wear off pretty quickly, go for the silver. There is a big difference in the two sizes so I would make sure you think about that decision the hardest. I have both but find I gravitate towards the large for EDC, not that the large is a bad choice it is just something worth giving some thought to.

The lockside lug on the small is very hard to use . It is easier on the large. I have never had an occasion that I needed it on the large or small. My vote is for silver hardware-I like the look and it doesn't wear off like the blue.
What ever you get I am sure you will like it. There are no bad models or configurations

I don't have a small, since I have an affinity for large knives.

I am ambidextrous, prefer options on deployment, especially enjoy occasional flick with middle finger. My large Insingo was ordered with double silver lugs by choice.

Most durable is hard anodized, flame anodize also wears well. Cosmetic color anodize has no durability factor.

HTHs.

The blue anodizing on the studs will wear off some what with use.

If you like silver better than blue studs you can do what I did with my 25. I used a product called Never Dull made for polishing many kinds of metal that

I've used for years. The ND took off all the blue on both studs. I think the silver looks much better than blue. Other products like Flitz should also work.

The ND didn't scratch the blade. I've used ND on a couple other CRK's that I have too.

I think all one handed folding knives benefit from being able to be easily opened with either hand.

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to say a massive Thankyou to all who posted and gave feedback.
Especially to those who posted pics.

After running over your responses I'm going to go with the silver hardware and single lug option.
It makes sense looking at the pics with the cutout for the dominant side and I can now see why people say it's a bit more difficult to open with non dominant hand.

Will need to track down the silver lug model now :)

Thanks guys!

Joel

The blue wears off, on the small the second thumb stud is really useless if your left handed and using a right handed model but as far as aesthetics I like the looks of the double better. Apparently the doubles are rarer than the singles not that that means anything....

If it's gonna be an EDC get whatever the cheapest cost for you, for me it was double with anodized lugs.

Like everyone else said, the blue will wear off. I would also recommend to get an inlaid version as it gives a little bit more girth to the handle. Whatever your decision, you will like it!

Just seeking some more input on the above.
To the guys that own Inlay and Plain no inlay Sebenzas. On the small version. Do you find the Inlays are better to fill the hand and for grip etc as noted above?
I'm about to spend my lifes savings on a Small Seb 21 and the last decision is to go with the Micarta scales or not.
I much prefer the look of the plain. It's $75 more with the scales. However the 2 points above, wider handle and more grip make it appealing as it's going to be a long term user!

Any help/info would be appreciated.

Regards

Joel

I have both and on the 21 I do prefer the inlay it just gives you a little more to hold on to, particularly in the small as it is a smaller knife. With the large it is not as much of an issue.
