So recently, I have decided to start making some scales from sheets of G10. Previously, I have been modifying stock scales but just never ventured into making my own from scratch. Anyway, I bought some 1/8" orange/black G10 and started making a set for my Kershaw Needs Work. So far, I have cut out both scales and drilled the pivot and lanyard holes. Still have to pick up a smaller drill bit for the screw holes. Also finished sculpting one of the scales- the second one is going to wait until tomorrow. Just wanted to post this to get some feedback from you guys- here's a pic:

The angle of the picture makes the scales appear larger as you go from right to left but they are all the same size. Right is the stock polymer scale, middle is the un-finished G10 and left is the (almost) finished G10 scale. I'm thinking about selling them (scales in general not this set) once I upgrade my membership here so I wanted to get an idea of the amount of interest before I decide for sure. Thanks guys.

*Update 1/10/12*: Finished sculpting the second scale, drilled the screw holes out, and did the final fitting. Had to come up with a new way to secure the hexagonal portion of the pivot bolt since I didn't want to try to cut out the perfect shape in the G10. Used a stainless washer underneath to put some pressure between the bolt and G10 so it doesn't spin as you adjust the pivot. Works well. It is also a manual folder now which I prefer. Operates very well and lock-up is solid. One scale is mostly orange and the other, more black since I used opposite sides of the G10. Same pattern though. Anyway, here is the final product after a LOT of work.

Thanks Gooeytek. I haven't really decided on that just yet. They are thick enough that I probably could but on the other hand, i don't want to risk messing them up. I actually remove the torsion bars from a lot of my Speed Safe knives anyway.

I really like the scale and the orange/black combo. I'd consider buying something like that from you for my BM 710. I find the OE scales a little flat and would like some extra meat to them, as well as the orange.

Looks like you are off to a great start. I always wanted to do something along those lines but never got around to buying the g10 (I am also awful at lining up holes and such) I think you should continue for sure, I look forward to seeing what else you do.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully will have both totally done by tomorrow. I also have some .03" toxic green G10...might do some liners out of that.

lookin good, and if the pivot screw is not recessed into the scale then I would imagine a wrench would probably work

I tried removing the torsion bar on my Needs Work a while back, and it did work ok but needed a flick of the wrist to help it out. I have a couple more of them and would be interested in a set like you have in the pics :) Might also use standoffs instead of the backspacer.

Looks great! I do have to say that I like the more orange side better. Oh and the pivot screw looks cool like that! Makes it look way more beefy. Great job.

Thanks. I agree, the mostly orange side looks better. I do like the contrast though. The pivot reminds me of the ZT pivots. I had to do it that way because it just wasn't locking up solidly without the washer. I guess the G10 was just a little too thin.
