So recently, I have decided to start making some scales from sheets of G10. Previously, I have been modifying stock scales but just never ventured into making my own from scratch. Anyway, I bought some 1/8" orange/black G10 and started making a set for my Kershaw Needs Work. So far, I have cut out both scales and drilled the pivot and lanyard holes. Still have to pick up a smaller drill bit for the screw holes. Also finished sculpting one of the scales- the second one is going to wait until tomorrow. Just wanted to post this to get some feedback from you guys- here's a pic:
The angle of the picture makes the scales appear larger as you go from right to left but they are all the same size. Right is the stock polymer scale, middle is the un-finished G10 and left is the (almost) finished G10 scale. I'm thinking about selling them (scales in general not this set) once I upgrade my membership here so I wanted to get an idea of the amount of interest before I decide for sure. Thanks guys.
*Update 1/10/12*: Finished sculpting the second scale, drilled the screw holes out, and did the final fitting. Had to come up with a new way to secure the hexagonal portion of the pivot bolt since I didn't want to try to cut out the perfect shape in the G10. Used a stainless washer underneath to put some pressure between the bolt and G10 so it doesn't spin as you adjust the pivot. Works well. It is also a manual folder now which I prefer. Operates very well and lock-up is solid. One scale is mostly orange and the other, more black since I used opposite sides of the G10. Same pattern though. Anyway, here is the final product after a LOT of work.
