My brother and his girl friend bought me an Ever Ready 1914 for Christmas this year and I finally got around to ordering blades for it the other day. I ordered some Gem Blue Star blades along with 100 Personna Lab DE blades and some Ogallala Bay Rum Shaving Soap samples. I know it was the wrong thing to do, but I gave a new razor, blade, and soap a try at the same time. I missed on the soap and used too much water, but went ahead anyhow. I found the ER 1914 to be a little aggressive, but right now I am chalking that up to the bad lather. The scent of the soap, Bay Rum & Sandalwood was great:thumbup: so no complaints in that department. I did 3 passes with the SE, but still wasn't as close as I would have liked, so I loaded up a Personna Lab into my Red Tip and did a touch up pass.

I loved the IP Reds and they were my go to, and recommend to others blade, I don't know how to describe the Labs. These things glided like butter on an already irritated face with a bad lather:eek: If it wasn't for the sound of the stubble being cut I would have sworn that I imagined putting a blade in the razor.

I am not going to give up on the SE, but I am going to make sure I have a good lather and prep before diving in the next time

Good run. I know what you mean by, hearing the sound of the razor cutting whiskers. On a good blade, I hear it on the first pass, less on the second and none on the third. That's when I know I'm on track. DM

Interesting! Hundred year old razor? Could you show us some pix please?

Thanks, Will

Not sure it is 100 years old, the 1914 is just the patent date and it was produced between 1914 and 1927. There are no date codes on the Ever Readys like there are on most Gillette razors so everyone just refers to them by the patent dates as the model:o

Mine came with the case and is in good to excellent shape so I think it is a later run. Still one of my older razors, I know both my Gillette single ring and New Improved are both from 1921. I will get some pictures later and try post them asap.

I have never been a fan of the ER razors. Just too harsh on my baby like skin and sandpaper beard. For reference, I like a british superspeed with Astra blades or feathers. The ball end Tech is my in a hurry-can whip it around an not care razor because it is so mild.

Though you have inspired me to try out a funky little SE I got sitting in my collection, the name escapes m right now, but I'll post it when I think about it. I have three packs of blades for it, because they are no longer made I haven't bee real keen on testing it out.

EDIT: It is an Ender single edge razor I have. The thread with pics is here.
