First small Sebenza - Plain 21 or Regular Web Sight

Hi all. I'm about to pull the trigger on my first small Sebenza. I'm currently deciding between the Plain 21 for $330 and the Regular Web Sight for $400, both brand new. I'm planning on using and carrying (no safe queens here), but I'm leaning toward the Web Sight b/c it seems that with the web pattern, scratches will look less dramatic in the long run. Plus I like the looks of a regular Sebenza better. Minuses on that model are that it lacks the blue thumbstud and is somewhat more expensive. Help me make a decision, and if you happen to own a Web Sight model, please say so and your particular experience with the knife. Also, if you happen to know the MSRP for the Web Sight, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I would honestly say go for the Regular web sight sebbie, the Regular patterns are gettting harder and harder to find so I would grab it while I can. $400 is the proper MSRP I believe for the web sight.

Yea the regular Sebbie are getting harder to find. I actually like the web site pattern. That wasn't always the case but it has grown on me a good bit. Typically I would recommend to get the plain Jane for your first. Why? Because if you do not like Senenzas in general when you get it then the plain version will be far easier to sell.
One thing I think the majority here will tell you is don't worry about marking up the scales because most of us feel that it looks better with wear. It makes personal and yours.

What BBQ Boy says makes sense.

I'm just a newb when it comes to Sebs so I may be the last guy you ought to listen to; but speaking as one in a similar situation I would say go for the regular, plain version first and see what you think.

I didn't think much of them until I actually got my hands on one. From what others have said sometimes the opposite happens. Try the regular model first and see how it affects you. . .

Plain, "regular" models are kinda hard to find these days, aren't they? I'm only seeing plain 21's due to their being the most recent. Even in forums and ebay.

Im also a newb but here's my opinion on your decision. If it was me I'd go for the web site regular version.First off since the regulars are getting harder to come by if u ever did want to move it that would be a good selling point.Secondly I think u will want to keep it and paying a little more for a cooler looking Seb just makes sense to me and u would probaly enjoy it that much more.

Now I need to go out and find me a regular small Sebenza before they are all sold up ; )

Good luck with your decision.

You have to realize the Sebenza is all about personal preference...the newer ones are a bitch to open with a strong detent ball holding it in place and not very fun at "playing" with and very hard to flick open when new....It does get smoother with use. I use my small sebenza as my hardest use knife. I have trimed the branches off the christmas tree this year with it as well as used it for opening up chestnuts and other tasks I won't do with my custom knives and it has never let me down ever. I DO RECOMMEND also buying the Chris Reeve Florinated grease at all costs because nothing...I mean NOTHING is as good at lubricating any knife that I have used in my life. (wear a vinyl or latex glove when using the stuff to keep it off your skin)
This knife is for life use it...use it a lot!

I know it can be confusing at first, but the "regular" the OP is considering is the Website model. The "plain" is the 21.

In the pic below, the "regular" design can be seen on the bottom two knives. Notice the different handle and blade shapes. The top two in the pic look like "plain" Classics (which are very similar to the 21's). And, of course, you know what a 21 looks like b/c you just got one.

Man, the annual camphor wood model sure looks amazing, and would be my favorite, but we're talking $550+! For that price, I would get a Hinderer X-18! But I'm not looking for a Hinderer at the moment, nor am I looking to spend even $400+ for a Sebenza. So I'll keep searching and let you guys know what my ultimate decision ends up being. One thing is clear: this knife will be purchased in less than a month, 'cause the money is burning a hole in my pocket! Keep the impressions coming if you have anything to add!

I would prefer a Lg. Annual to a Hinderer. Though I guess whatever floats your boat keeps it afloat. :)

Clockman - Thanks for the website!!! I love the variety in there, and might just end up getting an altogether different one!

Josh K - I follow you, man. I mentioned the Hinderer XM-18 because I like them, not necessarily more than a large Annual Sebenza, but they currently retain their value much better due to their unavailability. Still, my purpose is to get a small Sebenza as a keeper, and not for investment purposes. Still, $250 to $400 is my target at the moment, but who knows which model I'll end up getting!

Man, suddenly I'm between the Web Sight and a Native American they have at a website. Both for $400.00. Decisions, decisions!

I've got an XM-18 on the way even as we speak. But I bought mine (xm18) for hard duty carry. When I think of that knife I think Arnold S. in The Terminator.

To me the Seb is more of a James Bond type: a gentlemanly edc that can take it and then some when it gets rough. I think it's like comparing apples to oranges though.

Wow, it's been quite a ride! For the past 3-4 days I've been obsessing about my first Sebenza. Plain or decorated? If decorated, CG or wood inlay? Used or new? Regular or 21? I ran the possibilities over and over, read tons of posts about regular v. 21, plain v. decorated, quite a mental struggle!

But, go figure, in the end I chose and pulled the trigger on a plain small 21. I became convinced regarding the plain utilitarian look, the better grip you get with the 21, the pointier blade shape, and the fact that you can always swap scales in the future. I'm certain I will love this knife, as I've been wanting one since I started collecting back in the late 90's!

Thank you all for your great and useful comments. I'm definitely proud to become part of the Sebenza family!

You mean this one (little temptation for ya')?

The Native American is pretty sweet -- I've had my eye on that one for a long time. . . .

I can't recall whose pix these are, but I found 'em here somewhere.
So, thanks for the great pix. I use these on my desktop!

Folks often feel pretty strongly about the regular vs. classic/21 configuration. I prefer the easier lock/unlock access of the classic/21, but it's a personal choice.
