Just recieved my first SOG as a gift. So far, the knife feels good. It came very sharp, able to catch hair about 1/4" above my arm. I assume the blade is 440A. It did not come with a box, and the blade isnt marked for the steel type. The lock bar is interesting, since the loop from the bent lock bar just falls into the notch on the blade, instead of the tab used on solid lockbacks. Simpler, and solid. Well, maybe not simpler to make, but bending sheet metal into various shapes is a well developed science. Opens quickly, and the spring provides pressure through the full travel of the blade, not like the other assisted opening knives I've had or tried, mainly Kershaws.

2 questions:
Is there a way to disable the spring assisted feature?
Is there a way to take off the thumb studs?

I dont intend to disable the assist, but some brands can be disabled to meet various vague laws in different places.

Since the blade comes with a flipper, and I typically sharpen at 15 degrees or less for knives this size, the thumb studs seem like they will be in the way and I wont need them anyway.

The blade steel is actually AUS8.

Sorry can't help you with your two questions. You could try removing the spring but removing it might turn it into a gravity knife so I don't know how well that will work

Yes, the assist can be disabled. You will need to take apart the pivot and remove he spring. I don't think that the Twitch II will work very well with out the assist though.

As for the thumbstud it can be removed. They just thread into each other. Hope this helps.
