First Spine Tap Failure

I've been reading all the Spine Whack test threads. I have never bothered to test my folders, but last night I had the idea to test one of my knives, A Buck 889. I barely tapped (noticed it didn't say whacked) the blade and it closed right up on the third tap. I tried it a few more times and it was always on the third tap. I guess that knife won't be out of the storage bag much from now on.

This came up on the Buck forum too. A someone else had a 889 that did that. The reply from Buck was send it in. They also felt that what was important was if it held up to pressure applied to the back of the blade not whacking.

So I took out my 889. It too would close on what I call a mild whack. But it would hold tight if I simply put as much pressure as I could against the back of the blade.

I may send mine in, I have a real Strider to carry while its gone.:D

Push it (gently) and see if it closes. Sometimes even a light tap will cause a rebound effect that pops the blade loose. This will rarely be seen in normal knife use.

My basis for lock testing is to see if when pushing on the blade edge if the knife's lock fails. This is a little tough on the edge but we knife knuts know how to easily and quickly sharpen a blade so no big deal.

I don't use my knives upside down, spine first ( unless I'm in the woods spreading PB&J on bread).

I had an 889, which I ended up sending to a friend in Iraq. Its liner engaged as far to the right as possible, but it passed the spine-tap/wack/smack test and pressure tests without any trouble. Otherwise, if I'd expected it to be an amputation danger, I might've sent it to the other guys... heh... Now I'm carrying the 881, same story, no slippage either way (yet, <knock on wood>) :)

I'll probably send it in. The lock goes all the way across. None of my other liner locks engage that far and none of them fail the test. I nearly lost one of my finger tips a while back when a knife failed. I take no chances now.
