First splitting maul

I finally found and restored my first splitting maul, making sure to profile it properly, using a vintage 6lb True Temper head and a self octagon'ed sledge hammer handle. Needless to say, it is an entirely different tool from an axe. Compared to my 2 1/4lb axe I normally use, and can swing for 6 hours plus, I managed two hours before having to quit.
My hands just wouldn't hold the handle right at that point, they still can't, and that was two days ago!

Hey, good job. Give your arms and hands some time to get used to the weight and the swing. Don't forget though, when it comes to splitting tools, faster speed and a good profile trumps weight every time. Plus, it doesn't tire you out so quickly. That's how guys can use 3 pound axes to split tough rounds- they fling that sucker at break-neck speed. Is that a 36" handle?

I hear ya, I just hung an old Stanley 6lb. maul head
I got at a yard sale for 1.00, I had bought a nice 36 in.
handle for a sledgehammer head, but it was so nice it
had to go on the maul. This little guy just blows through
rounds, but I get tired pretty quick! I remember swinging a
12 pounder not so many years ago for hours at a time!
Just getting old I guess!
