Just got my first Spyderco, a Manix 2. I've had a Kershaw, some Bucks, and a few other pocket knives but none of them compare to this. Perfect G10, awesome jimping, and great ergonomics.

My only problem with the knife is how terrible I am at using the hole. That said, I'm better with the hole than I am with thumbstuds, but does anyone have any tips for me? I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

it takes some getting use to, I seem to have good results with putting the tip of my thumb on the upper edge of the hole near the jimping. the manix is more about opening with the axis lock. Hope that helped.

Use your pinky and ring fingers to hold the handle next to the clip. Your middle finger should be touching the G10 for stabilization as will your pointing finger. Your thumb should go upwards with a steady motion, push your thumb up and hold the knife with some slight tension to avoid it flying out of your hand. Use a steady and controlled motion to understand the relationship with your hand and the knife. Start slowly with caution.
Practice while watching your favorite game on TV. :)

One thing I notice my friends and family do with my Spydercos that gives them difficulty is how high or low their hand is on the handle when opening and closing.

A basic rule of thumb (:P) is to have your hand lower on the handle (further away from the pivot) when opening, and when closing (especially lockbacks and knives with choils) have you hand higher up.

This gives you adequate torque when opening (instead of cramping your thumb) and lets the ricasso, choil, or kick hit your index finger when closing. For some reason people seem to instinctively do this backwards and can't open smoothly and almost chop their fingers off.

Also - look on YouTube for many different techniques. This was very helpful to me. I didn't even realize you could close Spyderco lockbacks one-handed for a while, and now I own 4.

I think you mean the caged ball-bearing lock?

How can you have problems with the hole? Are you flicking it? Don't flick it! Use your thumb all the way. That's the correct way of opening a knife.

I've always used a flipper (like on several Kershaw knives) so I'm not used to anything like thumbstuds/holes/etc. Starting to get more used to it now though, after opening and closing my knife probably close to 100 times.

I didn't expect the knife to be quite so big when I ordered it, but now I'm happy it is. Even with how big it is, it rides perfectly in my pocket.
