First Spyderco - PM2 - Some Issues and Questions...

Got my first Spyderco today, Paramilitary 2, camo, satin blade. It was a bit of an impulse buy as I couldn't find one anywhere at a couple of gun stores that sell Spyderco, or at the good places online, so I went to ebay from a high volume seller that seemed to have a good rep in the forum communities.

Was a little worried about getting a 'FAKE' since this seems to be a popular model to copy. I think I'm good to go but I included some detailed pics to see if y'all good spot anything suspect.

All in all it's a solid knife, but nowhere near as sharp as I expected it to be. I've always heard Spyderco is famous for their out of the box factory sharp edge. My Walmart Kershaw Leek is much sharper. It flips open well and locks up tight, love the weight and grip texture, feels wonderful in my hand.

EDIT:

So I was overlooking the sharpness out of the box. I figure I can take care of that myself. After I got a chance to deploy it a few times I started noticing a rough feeling coming out of the folded position. Along with a noise, I took a video of it.

Being this is my first Spyderco, I'm a little curious as to 2 strikes right out of the box. This model has a ton of hype and I'm wondering if I just got a bad one? I expected a smooth action and sharp blade right out of the box. My Kershaws from Walmart at less than half the price feel better than this at the moment.

I'm usually not this anal but I had high expectations out of this piece. Am I asking too much?

You might also try a nice warm soapy bath then dry real good and add a drop of oil, I've noticed on some of mine that a short break in period is required.

Sharpen the blade to your standards and then clean and lube the pivot.Give her some time to break in.It looks like you have a fine example of a Para2 from the pictures.

Welp. While I was making dinner for my son and doing dishes I went ahead and gave the PM2 a bath. I soaked it for a bit in soapy warm water then rinsed it in hot water. Blew it out with canned air the put a little Ballistol on the mechanism then wiped and blew out the excess.

The rough noise is gone and now it's a very fine hissing metal on metal sound, like I expected.

I'll work on getting it sharpened this week. I need to get some supplies.

Thanks guys for the tips.

Here's a family pic for good measure:

Glad to help and it's a pleasure to pass on some of the knowledge that I was lucky enough to learn on this forum.Enjoy your PM2.
best regards,

There will be variations in sharpness from knife to knife since human beings do the edge grinding at the factories. I always at least strop a new knife and sometimes I have to completely reprofile to my satisfaction. The PM2 is authentic and will get smoother with use.
