First Spyderco (sort of)...

My true first experience with Spyderco was quite disappointing, and left me with a very poor first impression. The knife was a Native from Wal-mart, and the overall quality was subpar to say the least. The blade and lock had significant play, the barrel bolt/screw that secures the clip was cross-threaded and stripped, and the overall fit and finish was severely lacking. I returned it the same day.

However, I do like some of the Spyderco designs and materials, and the large number of satisfied owners led me to finally overcome my initial impression and give the company another try. I decided to order a Salt 1 yellow plain edge, because the H1 steel and the high-visibility scales appealed to me. Upon receiving and inspecting it today, I am now quite pleased. There is virtually no blade play and the lock is solid. The clip is properly positioned and the securing bolt is tight. The build quality is quite good considering the cost of the knife, with only a few minor imperfections initially apparent.

I am glad that I chose to give Sypderco another opportunity, and this will not be my last of the company's knives. I only hope that my future Sypderco knives are constructed this well. :)

something i've learned over the years is to handle several of a specific knife before you buy. It may annoy the counter help but I have gone through literally everyone of a pattern to pick the one I think is best and i have been amazed at the differences in a group of knives. that's one advantage to shopping in a brick and mortar store you can handle it before you buy it. Some internet knife stores also will check a knife before they ship if you advise what is important to you. glad you gave spyderco another chance you'll be glad you did. later, ahgar
