Hey guys, the thought of buying a spyderco never really appealed to me because i guess i though the the spyder hole would be uncomfortable Then the other day i read the thread "Spyderco" and it really reallly made me want a spyderco knife. So did some hunting around and found a shop near buy that sold their knives, so i went over and picked up my first one, a Endura 4, and i have to say..i think i'm hooked. I love it and there will be many more spyderco purchases in my future. Next week im either gonna pick up a delica or a native. What were your guys first spyderco and how did you like them?

My first two were atypical, I guess: a Kiwi was the first one because I loved the design at first sight, and then the luxurious Volpe, for similar reasons.
By now I have between 35 and 40 Spydies. I love nearly all of them.

If I can give you an advice: perhaps don't buy a Delica now, it's in essence a smaller version of your Endura. The Native is something more different in feel, and the price is right.
My best recommendation for your next one is probably the Caly 3, the VG10 edition is perfectly satisfactory (it was my 3rd Spydie, incidentally). It's smaller than the Endura, and it has an incredible quality to it. A modern classic, with a reason.
For a more "gentle" style than the utilitarian Caly, perhaps check the Sage 1 or the small Persian (which is about to be discontinued), or the terrific slicer that is the Centofante 3.

I'd go for the Tenacious as it gets alot of love around here, also you can't beat it at the cheap $35 price tag.

My first was an Endura 4. I liked it so I got a Native from Wally world when they were still selling them. Both are great knives. More recently, after hearing all the buzz, I picked up a Tenacious which IMO is one of the best values out there, and this last week I got a new Military in orange which is now my favorite. Spyderco makes some good stuff. I am officially hooked.

my first was a paramilitary in D2

2nd was a para in S30v

3rd was a smallfly

they are all excellent knives

Get the S30V Native you won't be disappointed. Great steel and ergonomics, rides flat an out of the way in your pocket and cuts like a larger knife. An excellent EDC knife.

1st: PS Endura
2nd: PS Wayne Goddard
3rd: PS Native w/ GIN 1 blade
4th: PE Delica
5th: PE Native 3
6th: PE S30V Native
7th: PE Tenacious

I've since lost one and gave three away two friends that needed and would appreciate a quality knife.

I just bought a UKPK and absolutely love it. If you're considering a Caly 3, you should also look at the UKPK. It has a deeper finger choil, CPM S30V (a very-high end steel) and a cheaper price tag.

Be aware that Spyderco is coming out with new versions of the Endura and Delica - probably in 2010. They will be full flat grind (like the Caly 3 and Dragonfly). There will also be 5 colors to choose from.

Hi Nathan,

Thanx much for the trust and support. I hope you enjoy your knife.

Id second the caly3. It is a fantastic knife. Right now the Carbon Fiber ZDP Caly3 can be had for about ten dollars more than the VG-10 one if you search a bit, where previously it costed 50 dollars more. Both are being discontinued I believe. If you think that a hundred or so bucks is to high, consider what you save by circumventing a few cheaper models on the way to the high end ones. The paramilitary and Sage models are also excellent. Check out a few YouTube videos on these blades to get a feel for them. Dagon has an excellent comparison between the Sage 1 and ZDP Caly3 that I'd highly recomend. Btw, the waved Delica was my first spydie and the VG10 caly3 was my second. I have a good handfull of Spydies right now but the Caly3 and Sage are my favorites. Enjoy whatever you get: Spydercos are among the best of production folders IMO.

My first was an Endura a long time ago. It was so good it was my only folding knife for many years.

I can't recommend the Native enough if you are already considering it. Any version but I am still very partial to the S30V version. My brother loves his CF FFG version and it is beautiful and and excellent knife but there is a substantial price difference. For overall utility I still prefer the blade on the cheaper one.

The Tenacious has excellent ergos and the fit and finish is above what you'd expect for a $35 knife.

Steel being 8cr13Mov, it's not going to hold an edge very long, but if that doesn't bother you, the Tenacious is a good cheap folder.

If you want a higher-end Spydie, consider the Sage 1. 3" blade length, textured carbon-fiber scales, and CPMS30V steel, which is a hard, tough steel which will hold an edge.

I happen to prefer liner locks to back locks, and Spyderco makes a variety of both.

Following on from my previous mail, perhaps a good progress path with enough variety:

1. first buy one that's smaller than your Endura. Caly 3 or Sage 1 are perhaps a bit upmarket but seriously good. If you are interested, I made a little video clip comparing these 2 similarly priced ones.
2. then, if you'd also like something bigger, sooner or later you'll want the awesome Military, one of the best designed folders ever. If you think that you don't need a bigger knife, then skip this step.
3. Perhaps you want something more gentle as well, then investigate Kopa or Kiwi or Centofante 3.
4. For an affordable beater knife, I would rather go to the Native than the Tenacious or Persistence because of the steel difference.
5. Try an ethnical-inspired Spyderco. From the ones that I have handled, the Chokwe is truly amazing.
6. If you plan next summer's holiday somewhere at the coast then you'll want to add something from the Salt series by then.
7. Eventually you'll want to add a fixed blade one.

if the price points of the Caly 3 are a tad too steep, get the Stretch! It has a nice flat-ground blade, perfect for slicing stuff, whereas the Endura is more robust and can handle harder work.

oh and the Stretch feels soo nice in your hand.. mmm

My 1st Spyderco was an Endura and Delica that I bought at the same time. I liked them both, but kept the Endura and gave the Delica to my friend.

Many Spydercos later and my favorites are the Manix and s30v Military.

My first Spyderco was an Endura 4, I didn't know what to think of it at first and I thought it looked ugly at first. Once I actually used the knife, well that's when I truly appreciated the design and started viewing the other models differently. The only other Spyderco I currently have is a Paramilitary and it's one of the best production folding knives out there (IMO of course). If you love your Endura 4 then there's no doubt you'll love a Para, one of the smoothest and most ergonomic knives I own. I'd recommend going for a Para instead of a Delica or Native.

My first was a C83 "Big" Persian I got several years ago, and i got the Spyderco bite. There is no stopping once you have owned, used, and appreciated a Spyderco.
