Just placed an order for my first Spyderco. I will be the proud owner of a Gayle Bradley soon. My question is, having never owned a CPM-M4 blade, should I worry about rust?

Can't wait for it to arrive!

Location, Location, Location. Maintain, Yes!! How much? I live in a fairly dry area so regular care is all that is needed. Humid? More care needed. The GB is my favorite knife, I have 2 of them and wont part with either. Fantastic knive, blade, edge and fit and finish are top notch. It should be a 300.00+ knife. You made a GREAT choice for a first Spydie. Hell it's one of the best Spydies available. Way way OVERBUILT. Enjoy!! John

In my experience, M4 will rust if you leave your blade dirty for a while. I clean mine often as i use it for a variety of different things. over time, the blade on my GB has gotten darker, with sort of a blue tint. I live in northern cal, so use that how you will.

After someone suggested it in another thread and after watching the following video, I use Fluid Film on my cpm m4 blades. Stuff is pretty awesome for just about everything.

not really almost every B&M store in NOVA is atleast MSRP, but most are over MSRP...

that being said stick to internet sites...

You know of any B&M shops that stock the para 2. I don't like lock backs. Not sure if I would like a compression lock. My question about the lock is how easy is it to close with 1 hand?

look at ANY video of the para2 on youtube, looks pretty easy

Try the surplus store near tysons or the hiking store near chick-fil-a on main st.

The wait is over! This is an amazing knife. The fit and finish are top notch. Dead centered blade. This is my first Spyderco, and it has the sharpest factory blade I have ever received. I own pretty much all of the competitive brands.

Honestly, I'm kind of wondering now what took me so long to buy a Spyderco.

Now I think I'm going to need to pick a Para 2. I'm a sucker for limited run production knives, I've heard there are a few on the horizon :)

By the way, I'm really digging the feel of the carbon fiber handles. I have other knives with smooth CF and the grip on this is much better, yet still maintains the classy look.

The Gayle Bradley is one of the best of the Spydercos you can buy.

This is what I use to maintain my blades:

Detailed Description
TUF-CLOTH
TUF-CLOTH is a long-lasting lint-free replacement for oil and silicone rags. Instead of using oil, Sentry uses a mixture of dry film corrosion inhibitors and lubricants to provide a fast-drying, water-displacing micro-bonding crystal barrier against rust, friction and wear. The waterproof shield will not attract dirt and it won't leave a slippery film like silicone. TUF-CLOTH protects more than 14 times longer than the competition. Simply wiping a surface with TUF-CLOTH provides cleaning, lubrication and protection. TUF-CLOTH is a revolutionary multi-purpose cloth that applies a fast-drying, water-displacing micro-bonding crystal barrier against rust, friction and wear.

What is TUF-CLOTH :

It's a unique replacement for oil/silicone gun and reel cloths. Sentry combines state-of-the-art dry film technology with a lint-free fabric to make TUF-CLOTH a superior, long-lasting product for both rust protection and lubrication. Sentry developed a formula of dry film rust inhibitors and lubricants which bond to metals. This mix impregnates a very durable yet soft cloth for easy application. TUF-CLOTH should be used to protect all types of metals and finishes, woods, and most plastics. It makes oil and silicone rags obsolete.

HOW IT WORKS: Wiping with TUF-CLOTH gives you cleaning, rust protection and lubrication. Pure mineral spirits is the carrier for the active ingredients and provides cleaning action. It evaporates, and Sentry's proprietary ingredients bond to the surface; this bonding assures long lasting effectiveness. TUF-CLOTH's waterproof protection will not wash off, thicken in the cold (even down to -40F/-40C) or attract dirt like oil-based products, nor is it a slippery film like silicone. TUF-CLOTH is user-adjustable; either by drying in air or adding pure odorless mineral spirits.

A "wetter" cloth applies a thicker shield of protection that dries more slowly. The excess can be buffed off after it is dry without compromising performance. A dry TUF-CLOTH makes a terrific polishing cloth; it beautifies wood and gives blue metals a deep luster.

DIRECTIONS:

Clean surfaces well.

Rub surfaces firmly with TUF-CLOTH. Drying time depends on thickness of coating/dampness of cloth. If cloth dries out add pure mineral spirits (not turpentine) to restore its original "feel". Return cloth to its special vapor-barrier pouch and seal tightly for longer life.

For hard-to-reach areas use with Sentry's TUF-GLIDE.

Use frequently if item is exposed to wear or stored outdoors. For extreme conditions or saltwater applications use Sentry's MARINE TUF-CLOTH .

Good choice on the Gayle Bradley for your first Spyderco. The fit and finish on mine was in line with a knife much more expensive. As far as the CPM-M4 steel it is now my favorite steel. I have no problem getting it very sharp and it holds its edge very well for what I use it for. I have left mine in my pants pocket and then accidental washed it and left it sitting in my damp jeans for a day or two. When I found it there were a few tiny rust spots near the edge that rubbed out with a scotch brite pad very easily. I think the steel is really more prone to staining than rusting in my experience. I will be getting more knives in this steel. Just my experience.
