So ive been looking at spydercos for a while now and finaly making the break from autozone knives and cheep gerbers and the delica has really grabed my attention but so hasnt the dragonfly i am torn between the two i am going to edc the knife so i need something i can pocket carry easily.

I found a delica zdp for 83 bucks or a g10 vg10 dragonfly for 73 bucks

i am not sure if i will even be able to know the difference in steel once i have it in hand

if you spyderco gurus can way in on this that would be great

i hear the zdp is harder to sharpen and more rust prone maybe i should just go with the regular delica and get a colored handle to boot

Hi Dcarp,

Welcome to our forum.

Delica is pretty hard to beat. ZDP is an afi steel that some find difficult to sharpen. I would suggest the VG-10 Delica as a basic EDC.

If the Dragonfly is large enough for you then it is a brilliant EDC knife.

Maybe get something bigger later if you feel like it (G10 Military)

In that range, you'd only be $20-ish more for a Chaparral. Just saying, because it's in my pocket :)

Hard to argue with Sal on the Delica, lol.

What Sal said. I would just add if you use your knife strictly for slicing/cutting get a flat ground model. If you are a little harder on them get a saber ground model.

Hard to argue with the opinion of the man that makes them.

Fwiw, I'd have a hard time not choosing the vg10 delica as the one knife I would choose over all others of could only have one.

I would go with the zdp189 delica. You will find that its a touch bigger than the dragonfly which I find is too small. the zdp189 is somewhat harder to sharpen and will pit if you do not take care of it, but the edge holding capabilities vs vg10 is well worth it.

so i just ordered the purple delica FFG and couldn't resist the 30 dollar lady bug salt for the fishing bag so i have two spydies on the way

I think you made a really good decision the Delica is a great size. I have both and the DF is great to throw in your pocket and an amazing knife for the size but for your main EDC you can't go wrong with an FFG Delica, good choice! I have never held a lady bug but I find the dragonfly small enough, I don't think I would want to go much smaller but I am sure you will find it handy.

IMO, the G10 Dragonfly isn't worth the extra money over the FRN or Salt models. If you want a G10 Dragonfly, then pick up a Byrd Robin in G10 first - nearly same dimensions and it's one of the best values in folding knives.

First get a Delica, then get a Dragonfly later. Start with Vg10, then go for ZDP189. That way you will enjoy vg10 and then be really impressed with zdp189.

I think the Delica is a better size for EDC, the Dragonfly is way too small for me. The Delica is not a very big knife by some standards. Unless you have the proper hardware for sharpening really hard steels, VG10 is the better choice as Sal has suggested.

Spyderco makes a lot of different knives and so it is hard to pick one and it be a bad choice. We could easily recommend 10 different models that would be good to start with. Nothing wrong with the Delica at all.
