Thought I'd post a couple pics of my
R-BK-12. I PCB etched the logos for 36-40 all told but in several applications(I'm not fond of delayed gratification!). They came out nice and deep.
Then stripped the coating off and lightly sanded at 600. I can't decide if I want to force a patina yet. Thanks for looking! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1387587676.836355.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1387587705.025296.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1387587824.059546.jpg

That looks nice.
I've been thinking about trying the PCB etchant.
How long did you let the etchant sit each time?

Thanks man! It's my first one so I'm no expert but I was very pleased with the results.
I left the solution on anywhere from 15-20min up to I think 20hrs on the last run.
I also used an acid brush and small art brush dipped in fresh etchant to continue exposing bare metal as the scale formed in the logos.
You should go for it! I had a great time with mine.

Where did you find the PCB etchant? I know I can order it online, but I prefer the old fashioned way. Someone mentioned RS in another thread, but when I went to the one nearest me, they were all like "HUH? What's that??"

Very nice. I personally like my blades coated because I'm scared of rust, but I can't ignore the amazing results you got. Good job!

Edit: You should really think twice about your titles. I was kind of scared of what I'd see when I clicked the link ;)

Radio shack for about 10 bucks gets you a pint(?). I forget the volume, its plenty for a few good knives.

The time will vary based on the steel. I have done VG 10 and S30V.. I got the best results by soaking ~15 minutes in a full strength etchant, with slight agitation, then removing and washing the blade (I whiped off the "slag" that builds on the surface of the blade) and then let soak for another 5-10 minutes...

repeat to desired darkness, dont forget that the blade will look lighter once it drys :)

My RS is terrible little tiny mall store, but I found 1 bottle in the small electrical parts section. It was $12 I think for a good size bottle.
It only took me about 2 ozs to do mine and I increased the depth of the logo substantially.

According to their website search engine, if I boost the range out to 50 miles, there are 3 stores that are SUPPOSED to have it in stock. We shall see. I got etching I want to do - both chemically and electrically to compare results simply because inquiring minds want to know and I have this genetically ingrained desire to experiment with things.

Great thread! I recently bought a bottle of PCB from RS and have yet to do any blades (have about 5 BKs to strip and etch right now) but plan on it soon.

Yeah, had a similar experience last time I needed an potentiometer... The guys at the radio cracked were all like "I dunno if we have that" 5 mins. later I showed them where I found it on the off chance someone else might need to know.

Clearly their customer service model is more ryan's buffet then cracker barrel ... unless you want a cell phone. The moral is go dig for it. I think they keep it near the solder/flux, but I might be mistaken.

It sure puts a nice relatively durable dark gray finish on stuff. Wish I'd taken the time to etch my '16 before I stripped it. kinda miss the etchings.

Thanks! Been working on these but got in a hurry drilling. May still be able to make them work? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1387840201.933409.jpg
